KARACHI: A non-profit organisation, Gul Bahao, will be launching a new project, ‘Gardens in the air’, on the eve of International Earth Day.

The ‘Gardens in the air’ are two wooden scaffoldings carrying a wide assortment of plants. “The objective of the project is to recycle organic waste which accounted for 50 per cent of Karachi’s total waste,” said the organisation’s spokesperson, Muhammad Hannan.

“It is meant to forge a nexus between the environment and the economy.” He went on to explain how the project worked. “We collected waste from road sites, garbage dumps, cattle farms and mixed it up in a small landfill site at Gul Bahao’s research centre in Gulshan-e-Iqbal,” he explained.

“The waste then transforms into organic filter which is then placed in plastic bags. The plants are placed in these bags and put up on the scaffoldings which makes them look like multitier fields.” The organisation has been exhibiting its project to representatives of the local and international media.
