Nearly a month ago, the number of backlog passports stood at 750,000 and that number has likely increased given that the passport directorate is accepting passport applications, and taking urgent fees from applicants knowing that it cannot process passports within the stipulated seven-day period. The kind of nefarious activity taking place at passport offices across the country needs to also be taken urgent notice of because according to media reports, “agents” are charging exorbitant fees to expedite the process in these troubling times for which they must have some official support. Then there is the very real concern about the impact this has had on the economy, not to mention overseas Pakistanis whose passports expire, as they run several legal risks in their host countries that temporary solutions do not address. People should not have to suffer this issue ever again. The caretaker government must immediately take concrete steps to resolve this matter and punish those responsible for putting the country in this sordid mess.

@Majid: And that makes you feel proud? This is a sickening admission.
Zardari and Bilawal both have UK passports ...they were unaware of this problem..
I paid the Rs 80000 and I got mine in three days.
@Sami Ullah: Sir Ullah Sahib, that is "MUKHAN waali category"
My 5 years son's passport is delayed from last 6 month while he has to travel in June. Disgrace for those who runs the system.
A government office, especially a Passport office which deals with the public, that is NOT corrupt would be newsworthy.
@Z: Why dont you join ET so we can get good quality research????
I have applied for an urgent passport of my wife on 15th of February but still I could not get it. I have visited passport office nearly two weeks ago and asked about passport but they replied your passport is late, if you were in hurry you had to apply for most urgent passport with Rs 5000 additional fee. I asked what is that category, you have not told me at that time. He replied, " O sir g hum Islamabad key aik account mein money transfer kerty hn aur kam ho jata ha". I was astonished to hear how hear this new category, "The Most Urgent".
Delays in passport is embaressing ! Malaysian and INdian colleagues tell me that their passports are now processed in 7 days time while Pakistan takes 1 month for 'Urgent' ones
Shocking just shocking that there is corruption in PAK.
so whats new?? have been hearing this since a while.
court hearing of passport crises, but where 7.5 lacs pakistani go who have lost there earning or facing other problems. I was about to deny entry in Dubai one week before on my manual passport which I had luckily made in Addis Ababa after refusal from passport office Muzaffar Garh. Supreme court do not see this and why not arrest immediately culprits who are readily available like Musharraf.
Why don't you guys do some actual journalism and get to the root of this? It's pretty clear the interior ministry and hence the ex-ruling party was involved.
