Women’s rights: NGO urges implementation of bills

ANP-led coalition government had failed to make sufficient legislations for protection of women’s rights, says Sardar.

PESHAWAR: Members of civil society organisations on Friday demanded the caretaker government to take action regarding implementation of laws on women’s rights before setting up a new government. President of Delta, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) Naazlee Sardar, in a press conference at Peshawar Press Cub, said the ANP-led coalition government had failed to make sufficient legislations for protection of women’s rights except the promulgation of four bills in this regard. A number of bills including protection of women trafficking, laws for elimination of customary practices, amendments in child marriages restraints act, acid throwing and burning of women were not adopted by the former provincial government during its five years, she added. Accompanied by Deputy Programme Manager Haroon Khan and Adviser Barrister Waqas Qureshi, Sardar called for Implementation of the Protection for Women from Sexual Harassment at Workplace Act and also informed her organisation had launched a project called “Strengthening Citizen’s” in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with cooperation of United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Barrister Waqas also highlighted that the Access to Information Act has also not been enacted upon by the previous government.
