April 18 was the day when Miandad hit a six off the last ball of the innings delivered by India’s Chetan Sharma when Pakistan needed four to win. The victory gave Pakistan the 1985-86 Austral-Asia Cup and a moment that would be cherished for a long time to come, celebrating the win over their archrivals India.
The legendary batsman was reminiscing the game’s most celebrated six as he marked the 27th anniversary at his home ground at the National Stadium in Karachi yesterday.
During a candid talk with the media, Miandad rushed towards Tauseef Ahmed who appeared at the scene by accident.
Tauseef, the number 11 during the match, cleverly rotated the strike on the penultimate delivery to give Miandad the strike for the final ball.
Both were then seen hugging during the surprise meet yesterday with Miandad kissing Tauseef’s cheeks several times.
“What he [Tauseef] did was exceptional,” Miandad said while praising his former teammate. “It was a pressure situation and he deserves credit for my six because I got the strike due to his crucial single.”
The former captain, while recalling the six, said it was still a lesson for cricketers.
“This tells batsmen to stay at the wicket because runs can come anytime. It was one of the most memorable moments for me because it boosted our cricket and united the nation. I still remember it like yesterday.”
Miandad suggests ‘15-20’ players per team
Meanwhile, the batting legend came up with a unique suggestion of fielding 15-20 players in the team.
“Why continue with 11 players per side. There was not much population in our times but now it has multiplied.
“More players should be given a chance to play in a playing team.”
To a query, the former captain said cricket is not played on laptops.
“Cricketers are made after hard work under the scorching sun and not on laptops,” he said, while lamenting the current players’ unwillingness to learn.
“Not a single cricketer has approached me to seek guidance yet. The hunger to learn is not present the way it used to be in our times.”
He added that he was ready to serve the country, saying he will accept an offer if approached for coaching after Dav Whatmore’s contract expires.

Must admit it was an awesome shot in a tense moment.......
Yes that was really a turning point for Pakistan cricket with many legends coming after getting inspiration from Miandad's six
correct Irtiza, that six was a turning point in Pak cricket history, a watershed moment....within a yr or so of the Six, we drew 1-1 with WI (at home), beat India in India and England (both at home & abroad) in Test series, also beat Australia 3-0 at home in 1988, again drew 1-1 with WI in 1988. That was also the start of a golden era of winning numerous Sharjah ODI tournaments, which more or less continued till 2000.
Why every news item is turned into an India Pakistan conflict? There are other good memories also, but that six made us believe in winning tournaments as that was Pakistan's 1st major tournament title. I remember Asif Mujtaba scoring a six of the last ball to tie the match against Australia in Australia, but there was something special about Miandad's last ball six.
@Indian, thanks for info :)
@Mobile key: it is shameful.....why cant you leave the game alone ...and then why did we celebrate 25 yrs after winning the world cup? Well for a 'failed mind" there is nothing but to make weird comments.
@Goran: india is currently champion at chess , cricket and also kabaddi.
@Victor, i wouldn't have commented but an now after reading your comment. In 1994 Pakistan was a world champion in 3 sports (Cricket, Hocky, Squash) and had an champion in amateur snooker as well (M. Yousuf). Has India ever been a world beater in 3 different sports at the same time??
@victor. Don't forget, in head to head tallies, Pakistan is still way ahead of India in terms of matches won in both Tests and ODI. And we did beat you most recently in the ODI series. Now to your point about "staying in the past"; there are certain moments in history, including sporting history, that are iconic. Iconic because they produce icons and memories that are everlasting. And the more distant they become from the past, the more valuable those moments become. So you should examine your presentist biases more critically. The past is not as removed from the present as you may think, if thinking is something you ever do.
@Babablacksheep:
"still burning even after 30 years? that is the reason to celebrate:D"
This is the attitude which has already ruined Pakistan. Nothing to celebrate there.
Well..people celebrate an event which happened 27 years ago when they don't have any other event to celebrate about in recent memory. I hope he is not celebrating his family relationship with Dawood, a known terrorist.
It was a great sixer by Miandad. No doubt about it.
@Viktor should have know that few Indians will intrude and will ruin this thread...
Salute to pakistan's optimism! India have so much to celebrate of, the olympc 6 medals, then the snooker/chess/rowing championships, not to forget, the sucess of IPL, and then the main, India defeats pakistan in 2003 world cup, then dramatically in the 1st international 'Bowl out' in the 1st T20 WC which witnessed the accuracy of pakistani bowlers, and the final humiliation. Not to frget india's ICC WC semi finals, which was obviously fixed because pakistan lost and indian players took money to play better. Still we celebrate for a day or so? and then move onn. The point is my good sir, good/bad both are part of a life, accept it, and move on! But this dude in the pic,, still stuck back in time since 30years! Influenced by the movie 50 first dates? Lol. History is a nice place to visit, but not a good place to stay in it.
@Babablacksheep: so your joys depend on our burning cooool :-P
U dont hv ur own somthing to enjoy?
this is guy is a constant and incessant complainer. and a great cricketer.
@Mobile key: still burning even after 30 years? that is the reason to celebrate:D
My god! Move on man.
Only a failed state with nothing else to celebrate can be so obsessive about a cricket match that took place some 30 years ago.
Why don't you celebrate the arrest of Musharraf now?
He stayed not out and scored a century in that match. It is safe to say that it is one of the best ODI innings by a Pakistani player.
Ali Khan
All i remember was how clumsy run was that after hitting the six;
What a lovely day it was. Tauseef hardly managed to make that important single as the Indian fielder could not run him out after Tauseef just played the ball towards extra cover and ran for the single.
But what that strange suggestion of playing 15-20 players in a match..that means bigger stadium...haaaaaaaaahaa
Why shouldnt they celebrate? I saw a report on Indian media saying that last ball six still haunt Indian cricket
That was indeed epic..
surely the happiest moment for Pakistan cricket after the 1992 World Cup. The Sharjah six has a major role in producing great cricketers afterwards
One of the happiest days of my life as I celebrated that six with my late father !!!!
Long Live Miandad,,,,long live Tauseef
Long Live Pakistan
