Afaq Ahmed, the chairperson of the Mohajir Qaumi Movement-Haqiqi (MQM-H), has been exempted from appearing in the court during the hearing of an appeal against his conviction in the case relating to murder of rival Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s activist in 2009.
Afaq was granted bail in the case on September 25, 2011. According to the prosecution, in 2009, four men, who claimed that they worked for Afaq, had opened fire on MQM workers.
As a result, a MQM activist, Atiqur Rahman, was killed.
Although convicted and later bailed, Afaq denied his involvement in the murder. He had appealed to the Sindh High Court for suspension of his conviction and sentences awarded to him by the trial court. On Tuesday, Afaq’s lawyer, Farooq Ahmed, asked the court to exempt Afaq from personal appearance. Justice Farooq Ali Channa, who headed the bench, allowed his plea.

Hearing on the appeal was adjourned till May 15 on request by the lawyer representing Amir Khan, who was also named in the murder case of Atiqur Rahman and was given bail after sentence.
