Free education: Private schools challenge law on free education

Petitioners’ lawyer Kamal Azfar pointed out that the bill had not obtained the necessary approval and it has lapsed.

Nearly 10 private educational institutes have gone to court challenging the provisions of the law.

The private schools are not ready to provide free education to 10 per cent of their students - as provided by a law passed by the outgoing Sindh Assembly.


Nearly 10 private educational institutes - Educational Services, The City School, Dawood Public School, Foundation Public School and Headstar School System, Springfield School, Happy Home School, Generation’s School, Froebel’s Education Centre, Happy Place Grammar School, Indus Academy and Bayview High School - have gone to court challenging the provisions of the law, Sindh Right of Children to get Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2013.

The former government passed the law which binds all private schools to offer free tuition to 10 per cent of their students. On Tuesday, petitioners’ lawyer Kamal Azfar pointed out that the bill had not obtained the necessary approval and it has lapsed. The judges noted the petition was missing details. Granting 15 days, the bench headed by Justice Maqbool Baqar adjourned the hearing.
