Election 2013: Notices issued on 25 scrutiny appeals

Former MPA gives in arrest on fake degree.

An election tribunal issued notices on 25 appeals on Tuesday in Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Jhang and Faisalabad.

The Election Commission of Pakistan had set an election tribunal at the Lahore High Court Multan Bench to hear cases on appeals from the region. The tribunal consisting of Justice Ejaz Ahmed and Justice Ebadur Rehman has issued notices on appeals filed by candidates, including former federal minister Faisal Saleh Hayat, Sikandar Bosan, Farooq Saeed Khan and Ghulam Haider Thind from Multan; Khwaja Dawood Suleimani from Dera Ghazi Khan; Aoun Abbas from Jhang; and Mumtaz Ali Cheema from Faisalabad.

A total of 25 appeals against scrutiny decisions were filed on Monday and Tuesday. The first hearing on these appeals will begin on Wednesday (today).

Former MPA arrested over fake degree

Former MPA Rizwan Gill, wanted for allegedly having a fake degree, surrendered before a court on Tuesday.



Gill, who has been sentenced to three-year imprisonment and Rs5,000 fine, had fled from the court when a judge had announced the verdict.

The court had also ordered the police to register a case against the person who [allegedly] sat the bachelor’s examination at the Punjab University in Gill’s place.

On Tuesday, Gill appeared before Session Judge Abdus Sattar and was arrested. Gill said he would move the Supreme Court against the verdict. He said that he had sat that examination himself and that the allegations against him were false.

Also on Tuesday, a district and sessions judge in Dera Ghazi Khan summoned the Jamshoro University registrar and examinations controller in a fake degree case against Mir Badshah Qaisarani.

Qaisarani, who had been declared wanted by the High Court and was released on bail, appeared in the court on Tuesday. The judge adjourned the hearing till April 12.

After the hearing, Qaisarani told the media that the case was part of a plot to defame him.
