If Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan has any doubts about his party’s chances of winning the upcoming general elections, he keeps them well hidden. In an interview right before his news conference, Imran spoke about his disdain for his main electoral rival, Pakistan Muslim League-N chief Nawaz Sharif, the fate of former president Pervez Musharraf and, interestingly enough, about the kind of questions being asked by returning officers.
As far as the latter topic is concerned, Imran’s stance is clear: ROs should stick to scrutinising financial corruption. “Scrutiny is always centered on financial impropriety or an obvious case of poor credibility,” he said, adding that the idea is to catch corrupt politicians. “If you widen the net [to include religion and personal conduct] these people [the corrupt] may get away.”
He unequivocally stated that disqualifying people on the basis that they failed to recite an Islamic verse defeats the purpose of the process. “This is not a religious knowledge test,” he said. “If this continues, some people who pose as religious and know all these answers despite being corrupt may pass through.” He emphasised the importance of catching loan defaulters, and felt religion should be “left to the personal domain”.
If Articles 62 and 63 are interpreted in a way which narrows the focus simply to the ‘ideology of Pakistan’, Imran feels that the wrong people will benefit. “People who have destroyed Pakistan’s future will come back into power,” he said grimly. He added, however, that a person who doesn’t believe in the very concept of Pakistan should not be in the National Assembly for obvious reasons.
After issuing public statements about having evidence of the Sharif brothers’ corruption in specific cases, Imran has failed to present any concrete proof during their scrutiny phase. When asked why, he responded with a laugh, “Should we be concentrating on our election campaign or go after them?” He explained that lawyers had advised him that, with a few weeks left for elections, there was not enough time to prove the allegations in a court.
When asked how his party - a movement that bills itself as one that stands for justice - feels about the chief justice being on the bench that will hear the petition demanding Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf be put on trial for high treason, Imran deflects the question. “If a treason case against Musharraf begins, then there will be only one conclusion.” He then changed the topic to focus on his main rival, Nawaz Sharif. “It is astounding for all of us that Nawaz Sharif is being conspicuously silent [about Musharraf] - he hasn’t uttered a word! He is the man who was affected the most. Why is he being as meek as a mouse? If someone had removed me from office through unconstitutional means,” asked Imran, “Would I keep this quiet?”
Then he answered his own question by smiling and mumbling about “some meeting in Saudi Arabia where a deal was struck”.
Between Musharraf and Nawaz Sharif, Imran couldn’t decide who he thinks has hurt the country more. “Musharraf brought in the NRO and allowed this government to plunder Pakistan for five years. Nawaz Sharif has amassed a fortune - there is no such thing as a ‘nicer person’ between the two.”
Upcoming elections
Imran said that PTI would request army security on polling stations on May 11, to ensure free and fair elections. “We definitely want the army to guard sensitive stations - they are the only institution that can guarantee any sort of protection.”
At a news conference held at the Pearl Continental after this interview afternoon, Imran was left perplexed at a question asked about whether or not he will quit his party position if made prime minister. Imran chose to pass the question onto the party’s former general secretary Arif Alvi, who said the party’s constitution maintains that elected officials will forego their party positions, something other political parties do not implement.
Seat adjustment with JI
While he admitted that the seats adjustment plan with the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) ‘is not working out’, he defended his willingness to finalise the plan for various constituencies. “We talked to the JI because they stood on principle with the All Parties Democratic Movement and boycotted the 2008 elections, unlike Nawaz Sharif who abandoned all of us.” He added that JI chief Munawwar Hasan is ‘a clean man’ and that “no one can raise a finger against him when it comes to corruption”.

@unmet46: "Has Ch. Allah Dad decided to vote for IK?"
It is more likely that some impostor is masquerading as him. I have always seen him speak only for PML-N
Musharraf made the mistake of NRO for which he has apologised to the nation, I totally fail to understand imran khan stance on musharraf, he initially supported musharraf when he over threw the nawaz government and now he calls the same coup as unconstitutional, I am a staunch supporter of musharraf and believe that imran khan makes too tall claims for Him self to fulfill, his claims are old wine in new bottle which every politician has been making for the longest time ever where as musharraf has been tried and tested and he has succeeded well in his endeavour on every aspect of governance.
Two votes for Imran Khan from Melbourne coming up. I live close to the MCG and at nights when there's a game on, cannot forget that fateful night in 1992 when IK won us the World Cup. Overseas Pakistanis are more idealistic and more likely to get teary eyed over Pakistan's success and there is no better person to get us there than Imran Khan. And I'm sure Pakistanis around the globe think the same.
I wish Pakistan to have a cleaner government than in India. Can Imran Khan clean the corruption in Pakistan? If Yes, I will do a prayer for him. For me stable Pakistan is good for my home town Amritsar.
Imran Khan is right, we want him. our New PM.
You are not the only hope, you are the last hope. Perhaps its too much but seems its now or never !! Who will survive to wait for another 5 years if its not your term.
it amazes me that a man who went to oxford cannot logically deal with facts and reality. bashing president musharraf, who did nothing unconstitutional by overthrowing NS as that takeover was validated by the SC with the will of the people who danced on the streets. the NRO was a mistake, but imran khan hasnt made mistakes? really? he apologized and the nation forgot. musharraf apologized too. why hasnt the nation let it go now? ch shujaat is on record of saying the NRO was his brainchild. yes musharraf went along with it, because in the nature of reconciliation he wanted both NS and PPP to be allowed to contest elections. but to say he allowed them to come to power is a blatant lie. only the people did that by voting for them. blame the people, not musharraf for the last 5 years.
@unreal, then I would like to vote for IK and see if we face "certain and impending disappointment" or not. One thing that is for sure is that we WILL see every type of crisis known to man if PPP and/or N comes to power again.
he is making all the right moves plus we don't really have a second choice.
Has Ch. Allah Dad decided to vote for IK?-
@Javid: "Someone should ask IK what the “concept” of Pakistan"
The concept of Pakistan is Imran khans own ideology of Pakistan but he would frame it in such a way that imran owns ideology would seem to come out of Jinnahs mouth.
@Samir: "Imran the Only Hope. A man who can make PAK a Next Singapore"
I already feel sad for you because you will experience certain and impending disappointment.
If there is a politician whose talk makes sense these days then it's gotta be IK. If you haven't got a pea brain then you can feel all the desire, sentiment and emotion for the country in his words and in his stature. Dripped with patriotism, he makes me a believer whenever he speaks.
Vote for Change, Vote for PTI...
I am residing in UAE and my vote for Imran Khan....as far as I know the people here....their vote is also for Imran Khan
Someone should ask IK what the "concept" of Pakistan is. Earlier it was "ideology" that was confusing everybody. But the facts are that neither the Quaid nor his associates ever committed Pakistan to any ideology, and it was not mentioned in any historical meeting , resolution nor in any historical or legal document. So now we have IK adding to the confusion by talking about "concept" of Pakistan..what exactly is that?
PTI can only win one seat from Tharparkar because of Shah Mehmood Qureshi who has lots of followers in Sindh. No other candidate of the party will be in winning position in whole the province including Karachi.
@sabi:
NS can take all his services and do what he wants with them--we will elect Imran. Is that clear?
The JUI is "clean" and nobody can life a finger on them when it comes to corruption??? Apparently IK has never heard of moral corruption. Corruption isnt just about stealing money.
@sabi "If you don’t have courage to tell the nation that generals and mullah has destroyed Pakistan you don’t deserve to be on highest post."
This itself disqualifies NS.
I don't understand people who defend politicians created by the unholy duo, but not willing to give chance to a person who has done so much for the country without ever being in power. Your judgement is seriously flawed here.
ET...thanks for not publishing my factual comment wrt Nawaz Sharif's corruption. I have yet to figure out your moderation policy and rationale of accepting / rejecting comments on adhoc basis.
@sabi: I have never figured out why do you have so much anger against IK? What have you done for this country?
Wow how scared he is of Musharraf? Musharraf and NS are the same he says - as NS looted the country, and P. Musharraf did NRO to allow the looting? So you think PM wanted the looting on purpose? then why he didn't just do the looting himself??? My dear he did NRO as people like you kept crying for "DEMOCRACY". So from that point of view, you say Munawwar Hassan is free of corruption - then why he making seat adjustment with NS now? You're right none can hold finger of corruption against him - but none can hold finger of corruption against PM either. As JI makes seat adjustment with PMLN similarly PM did NRO. Neither are good but at least don't compare Musharraf to NS - PM was a patriotic man who did lots of good for all us countrymen and sorry it is our duty to stand up against unnecessary blemish of his good name.
IK's maturity is growing and he sounds focussed and more like a statesman everyday, whilst all the other party heads, well, they are morally bankrupt to start with.
Way to Mr. Khan! All the best :)
“People who have destroyed Pakistan’s future will come back into power,” he said grimly." If you don't have courage to tell the nation that generals and mullah has destroyed Pakistan you don't deserve to be on highest post.
"He explained that lawyers had advised him that, with a few weeks left for elections, there was not enough time to prove the allegations in a court" You have been propagating against NS for years and now you pretend you have no time to prove him wrong.Do you think poltics require no morality?.NS has infinetly more services to Pakistan than you.And moreover I have not seen him doing your chracter assaination. Forget that you can change the fate of this country unless you change yourself.
Imran has proven his credentials of financial probity, and leadership qualities. Like the mythical phoenix, he has risen from the ashes to acquire a commanding position in the country's political, sports, and social welfare strata. Imran Khan has patiently worked hard for many years and is now the fear and envy of his rivals. The citizens are hopeful and pray for the successful change he will, Inshallah bring to Pakistan. Salams and best wishes to Imran Khan.
Totally correct.
Imran Khan Zindabaad.
Few days ago, I was skeptical about IK to win the election. However, I have been following his campaign trail for last few week and I notice that the way he is running his campaign and the supports he has all over the web ( I hardly see anyone talking good about anyone other politician ) will definitely pave a straight path to Prime Minister House. Just on tribune.com.pk site, any news on IK gets hundreds of comments vs few comments on any other topic or on politician. If you don't believe me spend time to explore...
Love you IK. PTI will sweep the elections inshaAllah
Imran the Only Hope. A man who can make PAK a Next Singapore. An Astonishing Economical Magnet. We need this Person. may GOD help him to WIN..
Well said Kaptaan
His worries should be over now. ECP has already instructed ROs.
To the statement..."Imran has failed to present any concrete proof during their scrutiny phase"...you don't need a proof for something as obvious as massive corruption that was done by NS...just looking at the pace at which they have built up business across England and Middle East will suffice...however, if you are looking for details, "Capitalism's Achilles Heel..." by Ramond Baker is a good starting point
Yes. You can only raise a finger against Munawwar Hassan when it comes to raped women remaining quiet. But of course to the great Khan that doesn't matter as you cannot raise a finger against Munawwar Hassan based on financial corruption. Moral corruption of course is not a topic to brought up because everyone loses.
