MULTAN: The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has told several universities to discontinue their distance-learning and online diploma programmes. A notification issued on Saturday, says the diplomas are not recognised by the commission. The matter was brought up by Dr Ishaq Faani, the Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan, distant-learning programme director, in January 2013. An HEC enquiry committee later concluded that only six universities – Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan, Gomal University, Dera Ismail Khan, Peshawar University, Karachi University, Sindh University, Jamshero, and the Punjab Univeristy – were permitted by the commission to undertake distant-learning and online programmes. The rest were asked to discontinue.

This ia wise decision. Let HEC take stern and quick actions against such institutions to stop commercialism in the education. Moreover there shall be uniformity of standards for various degrees and diplomas.
