KARACHI: The Pakistan Rugby Unior (PRU) has hired Welshman Rogger Combs as the head coach of the national team, giving him an additional responsibility of being the technical director as well.

Combs, who arrived yesterday, will assess players as his first task, read a PRU statement. The Welshman is a Level 3 certified coach, involved in roles with teams from all over the world. Combs has also served for various English Premier League teams including the London Irish, where he worked under the legendary Clive Woodward.

In addition, Combs has also coached in Italy, the US, Nigeria and the Caribbean. Combs was head coach of the Bahamas for the World Cup Qualifiers.

PRU looking forward to better results

PRU Secretary Fawzi Khwaja was delighted to rope in the experienced official for the Pakistan team.

“We are excited to have him,” said Khwaja. “We are confident that he will bring significant improvement in the team and the national side can progress further under his supervision.”

Combs will be the fourth coach to serve the country with Pakistan having already hired MR Rambo Leung (Hong Kong), Mlke Pirrit (New Zealand) and Justin Fitzpatriq (Ireland) before.

To train women players as well

However, Combs will associate with the team for a longer period during which he will also work with the younger players besides training women as well.

Combs’ immediate task will be to supervise a 15-a-side camp for next month’s Asian 5 Nations in which players from all around the country have been invited.
