Waking up from slumber

Letter April 04, 2013
The upcoming elections won’t change situation much unless people realise that they need to wake up from their slumber.

KARACHI: The recent bloodshed in Abbas Town raises many questions. Is it a new strategy towards spreading sectarian violence or was it a step towards destabilising the state? An air of callousness has spread among the people. Now, a layman is only concerned about his own life and cares little about others, something which has become socially-acceptable behaviour. Television channels gave coverage to the Abbas Town tragedy for a few days but it now seems to be receding into the background.

So, what are the underlying causes, effects and solutions of this state of affairs? We are, unfortunately, victims of a mass hypnosis and the interesting fact is that the people don’t even realise it. They have stopped considering the possibility of getting out of this morass and changing their lives for the better. But they will only start thinking along these lines, for changing the system they live in, when they get relief from hunger, security and shelter problems. Ordinary people are struggling hard right now to obtain the basic necessities of life. They do not have the time to think about the solution or the causes, which have reduced them to such a state of affairs. The upcoming elections won’t change the situation much unless people realise that they need to wake up from their slumber and break out of this “mass hypnosis”. We need to spread awareness that we can aspire to a better life.
