The fight for water

Letter March 30, 2013
By the time Pakistan celebrates its first centenary, it would be rich in people but poor in terms of water resources.

LAHORE: I am currently reading a book titled Save water, save Pakistan on the importance of water and its conservation for a country like Pakistan. The author of the book is BA Malik, who has experience of working with both the World Bank and the United Nations. It describes in great detail the water resources of Pakistan, including not only the rivers but also the country’s network of dams, canals and barrages.

The author warns that by the time Pakistan celebrates its first centenary, it would be rich in people but poor in terms of water resources and that this could have a major negative impact on food security. The development of water and power resources is being held hostage to regional politics.

It is not possible to do full justice here to a 256-page book full of facts and figures, tables and graphs and a lot more, which can only be copied a little at a time for those who have not given up the fight yet.
