GILGIT/ SHANGLA:

Two policemen were killed and eight others were injured in two separate incidents.

Two police officers, including a Deputy Superintendant Police (DSP), lost their lives while three others were injured in an attack in Diamer district on Thursday night.

A police van was attacked by unidentified armed men in Tangir Valley at around 11pm while on routine patrol.  “DSP Ataullah and Haleem have been killed in the attack in the valley, about 250 kilometres from Gilgit,” DIG Ali Sher confirmed on Friday.

The three injured policemen are in stable condition. Sher added no organisation had claimed responsibility for the attack and it is still unclear who was behind it.

Meanwhile, five police officials, including a DSP, were injured when a roadside bomb exploded near their vehicle in Bisham on Friday.

The injured DSP, Muhammad Ayyaz, said he was informed by headquarters around 12:30pm that an explosion had occurred in Baktot on Karakoram Highway. Ayyaz and several other police personnel were en route to the site of the blast when a second explosion occurred near their van, injuring him and four other officials.

Ayyaz said the device was remote-controlled, adding it was detonated when their vehicle reached Shang Ganri. Heavy contingents of police reached the site after the incident and shifted the injured to a hospital, where they were administered first aid and then discharged.

The DSP added police and security forces blocked Bisham Road for all kinds of traffic in order to launch a search operation. The search went on for over three hours, but no arrests were made till the filing of this report.
