Former civil intelligence chief appointed IG Punjab

This appointment was made by the federal government after consulting the Punjab caretaker chief minister Najam Sethi.

Aftab Sultan has served as the chief of Intelligence Bureau in 2011.

LAHORE: The caretaker federal government has appointed former chief of the Intelligence Bureau Aftab Sultan as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP) in Punjab on Friday, official sources said.

A notification for the appointment of Aftab Sultan as IG Punjab was also issued by the Establishment Division on Friday.

The appointment was made by the federal government after consulting the Punjab caretaker chief minister Najam Sethi, sources familiar with the matter said.

Nabeela Ghazanfar Awan, the spokesperson of the IG Punjab confirmed the appointment to The Express Tribune.

Aftab Sultan, a senior police officer of Police Service of Pakistan (BPS-22), was previously serving as Commandant at the National Police Academy (NPA) Islamabad. He is known as an upright professional and honest police officer.

Sultan was the Regional Police Officer (RPO) Sargodha Region in former president Pervez Musharraf’s regime and had left the post over differences regarding the presidential referendum, when he was asked to play a role to increase the turn out in presidential referendum by pressurising the general public through his subordinates.

Aftab Sultan’s Profile

Aftab Sultan was born in 1954 and belongs to district Faisalabad. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree and an LLB. He joined the police force as assistant superintendent of police (ASI) in 1977, and was promoted as superintendent of Police (SP) in 1983. Sultan was elevated to the position of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in 2000. Owing to his excellent services the federal government promoted Aftab Sultan in next grade BPS-21 and after this promotion he was posted as Additional IG Finance and Welfare in Punjab.

During his career, he served as SP and SSP in different districts of Punjab including Gujranwala, Gujarat, Sahiwal, Khushab and Faisalabad. He has also worked in the Special Branch.

He remained RPO Sargodha, DIG Elite Force, DIG Welfare and Finance and Director Research and Development (R&D). He was made chief of civilian spy agency –Intelligence Bureau – in 2011.

The caretaker setup was implemented through the 20th amendment, which the pmln helped to pass. Care to explain that then?
