KARACHI: Over 1,100 graduates were conferred degrees at the 16th Convocation of the Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology (SSUET), held at the Expo Centre on Tuesday evening.

Sindh High Court (SHC) Chief Justice Mushir Alam, who was the chief guest, appreciated the efforts made by SSUET in producing 10,000 engineers. Addressing the graduates, he said that they have been equipped with the creative and innovative abilities to take up the challenges ahead and should contribute towards a more successful and technologically advanced Pakistan.

He told the audience that Pakistan is a land of opportunities and it was blessed by Allah as it had the world’s third largest coal mines, fifth largest gold mines, seventh largest army and 11th largest gas reserves, besides being the third largest cotton producer, fourth largest rice producer and the 11th largest wheat producer.

“Just as we have high confidence in your capabilities and on the excellence of the academic grooming each one of you has received, I personally, and above all, your parents and family members have very high expectations from each of you,” he said. “It is a strong conviction of all of us that the engineers could change the country if they devote their energy and time to make new breakthroughs.”

The CJ also touched upon the current political scenario and said that Pakistan had achieved a milestone in the form of first ever uninterrupted term of democracy after a long dictatorial rule. He also said that nomination of former judges as caretaker prime minister and caretaker chief ministers of Sindh and KPK was a manifestation of trust in the judiciary.

Earlier in his address, SSUET vice-chancellor Prof. Dr Jawad Hussain Rizvi informed the audience that since its inception in 1994, the university has provided education to over 10,000 students in a number of disciplines. In total 1,123 students were awarded degress in various engineering disciplines - 255 in civil, 324 in electronics, 100 in telecom, 78 in bio-medical and 275 in civil engineering and 91 in computer science.
