The Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) government has warned of taking action against car owners who do not get their non-customs paid (NCP) vehicles regularised by March 31.
The Federal Board of Revenue has set up an amnesty scheme through which owners of NCP vehicles can pay duty and get their cars registered. A ‘customs counter’ has been opened in Gilgit for this purpose.
“Once the deadline ends, action against such cars and owners would be taken,” read a statement issued by the chief minister’s office on Wednesday.
Long queues can be seen outside the Customs Office in Gilgit as people try to avail the amnesty before the deadline expires. However, many NCP vehicle owners have expressed reservations over the amount of duty being charged, terming it ‘excessive.’
According to officials, the national exchequer can generate Rs2 billion in taxes if 3,500 smuggled or non-duty paid vehicles are legalised during the set period.
