Route out of crisis: AJK contemplating privatisation of power sector

State’s government intends to invite private sector for investment in the hydel power production sector.

The Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) government is contemplating to implement a proposal of phased transfer of power supply system to the private sector to ensure power supply smoothly.


Official sources said on Tuesday that the state’s government intends to invite private sector for investment in the hydel power production sector.

Besides this, the government is also thinking on the proposal to hand over the electricity distribution system to the private sector. At the first leg of the plan, the power supply network in six sub divisions of the state are proposed to be transferred to the private sector, the sources revealed.

Meanwhile, the public sector AJK electricity department had been directed by the government to accelerate recovery of arrears worth millions pending against various domestic, commercial and industrial consumers in AJK.
