LAHORE: The Punjab government has waived off the tuition fee of students in the flood-hit areas of the province.

The announcement was made by Punjab Education Minister Mujataba Shujaur Rehman at a press conference in Lahore today (Monday). He said that tuition fee worth Rs300 million rupees of 62,000 students have been waved off.

He said that his ministry would propose the University of Education to grant fee concession to students in its campuses in Multan and Dera Ghazi Khan.

At least 7,820 schools have been destroyed by flooding in Pakistan, forcing more than 1.6 million children out of the classroom. The NGO Save the Children estimates at least 5,000 schools are being used as shelters across the country.
