FAISALABAD:

World Kidney Day 2013 was observed in the city on Thursday to raise awareness of the importance of kidneys to our overall health.

In addition to school teachers and staff, as many as 200 students of the Little Angels School Civil Lines participated in a walk starting from Faisalabad Press Club.

The day is observed every year on the second Thursday of March in more than 100 countries. School principal Ms Samina said that this year’s theme was Kidneys for Life – Stop Kidney Attack.

She said high blood pressure and diabetes led to an increased risk of kidney diseases. “We should adopt simple life styles and get ourselves regularly checked in order to avoid kidney failure,” she said.

She said, “Kidney diseases are curable if detected at an early stage. Therefore, we should immediately consult the kidney specialists in case of any problems.”

Mrs Naveed, another speaker, said World Kidney Day was meant to spread awareness about acute kidney injuries. She said besides stimulating discussion, education and consistent policies were important.

She said, “A number of people are unaware about their kidney diseases…by the time patients realise the situation, it is frequently already too late.”

She said if kidney diseases were detected early, there would be no need for dialysis or kidney transplants.
