Shahid Afridi hit his 300th six, sealing the record of the most sixes in an ODI career.
Colin Ingram hit an unbeaten century to propel South Africa to an easy win. He scored 105 off 104 balls as a full strength South African side posted 315 for four to set Pakistan a tough target despite improving batting conditions.
Pakistan managed only 190 in reply, bowled all out in 36.2 overs. The result provided a major boost for the home side, who despite their top test status have recently struggled in one dayers as they experimented with their line-up.
"It was exciting to see the guys perform like that. We've not exactly being doing well in the one day arena of late," said captain AB de Villiers.
Ingram's ton was ably supported by decent knocks for all five of the other South African batsman, particularly a swashbuckling 34 off 14 balls from Farhaan Behardien.
Ingram and de Villiers put together a 120-run partnership for the third wicket after openers Graeme Smith (30) and Hashim Amla (43) had laid a decent foundation before being dismissed in quick succession.
Pakistan failed to get any momentum in their reply despite an opening stand of 42 in the first seven overs before Nasir Jamshed (25) was caught behind.
Fellow opener Mohammad Hafeez can feel hard done by after being given run out by the third umpire. Television replays failed to provide conclusive evidence that Rory Kleinveldt had deflected a drive from Younus Khan on to the wickets that caught Hafeez out of his crease as he was backing up.
A late cameo from Shahid Afridi, who hit one six well out of the stadium as he smashed 34 off 16 balls, came too late to rescue a regular fall of wickets as Pakistan slipped behind the required run rate.
"We didn't exploit the condition early on or when the wicket became easier," admitted captain Misbah-ul-Haq.
The two teams, who are also preparing for the Champions Trophy in June, continue the five-match series at Centurion in Pretoria in a day-night encounter on Friday.

Talent ungroomed is talent wasted. PCB has wasted so much raw talent. From Amir to Umar Akmal...kids going wrong because they don't have a stablizing hand. Emotional responses to Bangladesh PL and Indian PL. Play in Australia, don't play in Australia? How are players to build the mental capacity to be world class? Right now Pakistan is relying totally on its aging players, Misbah, Younis, Saeed.
PCB is a bunch of corrupt people, they have been deliberately ignoring teented payers like, Haris Sohail, Usman Salahuddin, Ahmed Shezad, Anwar Ali, Hammad Azam, Sadaf hussain, Mohammad Talha, Junaid Khan, Imran Khan, Zia Ul Haq and Raza Hassan. Wake PCB before pakistan cricket turns into another Zimbabwe cricket team.
@Jenai dau: U r right. Bt v dnt consider bowler as HERO. They r just like laborer in match.
The PCB management must immediately sack Misbah from the team not only from captaincy. Now Afridi has gained his some sort of form and his strike rates gone up in triple digits. Misbah is not having team spirits and not an aggressive captain. It was accidental appointment of Misbah not on permanent basis.
Afridi has some technical faults running in his bowling which needed to be rectified. this is for the first time ever in the total of 350 matches he has played he got hammered for 5 fours in an over.
@mirza ur a nation of billion people and still u cant produce bowlers like the two W's.
@Mirza: Pakistani team does not needs your advice. They can take care themself very well.
Mirza forgot what Pakistan did to his team India.
50 overs matches are too much for this Pakistani team. They should play T20 and start T10 if possible. One T20 win against a B team of SA was a great achievement for these Pakistani cricketers.
So what if Pakistan lost....happy that Afridi has created a world record. He is one of the greatest batsman in the world....Hopefully he creates more records for pakistan
Wicketkeeper batsman - Mohammad Rizwan, Adnan Akmal. Middle order batsman - Haris Sohail, Usman Salahuddin, Umar Amin, Umar Akmal. Operners - Awais Zia, Ahmed Shezad, Nasir Jamshed. THE PCB SELECTORS ARE BLIND WHY DONT THEY SELECT THESE PLAYERS
@Omar Also conceded 5 fours in his one over.
Pakistan lost the match when they elected to field after winning the toss
Unless Pak improve their batting they will continue to suffer such losses.
Afridi has given his full time to Pak team .And I don't think He has further potential For pAk team. By the Way Omar Bhai ,Not a single pakistani hates Him..We just believe that Afridi's time is over now.
No big deal, a team in green won this match...
Afridi back in form. 300 sixes for boom, he creates another world record. Where r the afridi haters?
Pakistan 167/7 (34.0 ov) we are losing....
