PESHAWAR:

Lawyers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) boycotted court proceedings to observe a ‘black day’ on Saturday.

Following an announcement by the K-P Bar Council, the Peshawar High Court Bar Association also endorsed KPBC’s call and lawyers practising in the high court and district courts boycotted court proceedings.

Lawyers said they observed March 9 as black day to protest against former president Gen. (retd) Pervez Musharraf’s decision to depose Chief Justice (CJ) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry in 2007, adding that they would observe the black day in future as well.

Press Secretary Muhammad Naveedul Bashar said the courageous CJ refused to bow down before the dictator’s unconstitutional decision on March 9, the day lawyers started their struggle for an independent judiciary.

Meanwhile, a month-long dispute between the legal fraternity and the police was resolved on Saturday when police officials apologised for allegedly beating up a lawyer for possessing weapons, which they later learnt were licensed.

Lawyers took to the streets demanding an FIR be registered against the accused police constables and Assistant Superintendent of Police Akbar Ali.

Deputy Inspector General Liaquat Ali, Senior Superintendent of Police (Operations) Imran Bangash along with other police officials offered an apology for the incident.

Lawyers had demanded Peshawar High Court Chief Justice Dost Muhammad Khan to take suo motu notice of the incident which he did on February 7.

During the hearing on February 14, the court had directed the provincial police chief to register a case against police officials for beating Furqan upon receiving the medico-legal report which stated that his nose had been fractured.
