The Election Commission of Pakistan has announced that fresh elections would be held for two vacant seats in the Senate.
The two seats remain vacant after Abdul Hafeez Shaikh and Nawabzada Mir Haji Lashkari Raisani resigned from the Upper House.
Hafeez, who served as the finance minister, was elected on a technocrats’ seat from Sindh, while Raisani was elected from Balochistan.
The notification sent by the election commission asked the provincial assemblies to elect a member from their respective provinces. ECP also issued a schedule for the polls, which includes nomination of the candidates, scrutiny of the nomination papers and the final dates for both withdrawal of candidature and polling.
ECP will scrutinise nomination papers of candidates on Saturday and will hear appeals against rejection of any nomination papers on Sunday. On March 13, ECP will announce the names of the contesting candidates. Sindh Assembly will vote on March 14 whereas Balochistan Assembly on March 27.
