NEW YORK,: The Metropolitan Museum in New York has invited award winning Pakistani artist Imran Qureshi from May 14-November 3, 2013, to create a site-specific art installation atop the museum.

The installation at the Metropolitan Museum has been organised by Sheena Wagstaff, Chairman, and Ian Alteveer, Associate Curator, of the Department of Modern and Contemporary Art.

His design will be on display from May 14 through November 3, 2013, as part of the Roof Garden project commissioned to Qureshi.

“We are so excited and honored to invite Imran Qureshi to cast his perceptive gaze on the Metropolitan Museum,” said Sheena Wagstaff, the Museum’s Chairman of Modern and Contemporary Art.

Qureshi is considered to be one of the best artists creating ‘contemporary miniature ‘aesthetics. He is the first artist to create a work that will be painted directly onto the surfaces of the Roof Garden.

Qureshi, born 1972, Hyderabad, is renowned for his skillful interpretations of traditional miniature painting. His paintings reflect his artistic reconciliation of the region’s history with the reality of Pakistan today, as well as using art as a means to reconsider the contemporary relationship between Islam and the West.

The miniaturist is adept at creating large-scale environments in architectural space, addressing the building’s proximity and the site’s historical and political associations.

A book named ‘The Roof Garden Commission: Imran Qureshi’ will also be published in conjunction with the installation. It will provide the artist's perspective and other contexts in which to consider the projects.
