President Asif Ali Zardari will perform the groundbreaking ceremony of the new Sindh Madressatul Islam University (SMIU) campus in Education City, Karachi next week.

The President will also lay the foundation stone of the SMIU Tower, comprising 15 floors. The Sindh government has given 100 acres to the university for its new campus where construction will start after the groundbreaking ceremony.

University Vice-Chancellor Mohammad Ali Shaikh said that the land was given by the Sindh government to the alma mater of Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah free of charge. Dr Shaikh said apart from 10 new departments, the campus will also have a medical college, engineering college, SMIU Hospital, hostels for local and foreign students, and flats for the university employees.

SMIU is the only public sector university which is located in the centre of the city, he added.
