District sessions judge of Nowshera on Friday turned down the bail plea of Awami National Party (ANP) leader and former provincial minister Bashir Khan Umerzai and his three sons in Alamzeb Umerzai’s murder case.
The four were nominated as suspects in the murder of Alamzeb and had been awarded bail before arrest last year by Charsadda Judge Jahanzaib Shinwari.
However, Nowshera District Session Judge Abdur Rauf refused to confirm the bail and Bashir Umerzai and his sons, Khalil Khan Umerzai, Afzal Khan Umerzai and Mansoor Khan Umerzai, were arrested as a result.
The four accused were presented before the court in Nowshera instead of Charsadda due to security reasons. The case was heard under high security.
Alamzeb, an MPA from the then Pakistan Peoples Party-Sherpao, died in an attack outside the Sui Gas office in Charsadda in 2010. A Sui Gas officer and FC personnel also died in the shooting.
On January 11, all four suspects narrowly accused escaped a remote-controlled bomb explosion in Khan Garhi, Charsadda, which injured 11 people including Bashir Khan.
Khalil Khan Umerzai filed an FIR against Alamzeb’s brothers, Arshad Khan Umerzai and Khursheed Khan Umerzai, accusing them of being involved in the explosion.
Alamzeb’s brother Hidayatullah denied the charges, maintaining none of his family members were involved in the attack.
