I was not invited to the inaugural ride of the Metro Bus. Nor did I try the free ride the following week. My wife and I boarded the bus on a normal day by paying the subsidised fare. The purpose was to see the extent to which the London dream had been realised. We boarded at the Model Town stop. Despite the modern look, the sheen was off at many places. Since the escalator was not functioning, we had to use the stairs, which are already looking like those at the railway station. At the ticketing counter, there was a protesting crowd rather than queues, having waited for an hour for the tokens. Some were contemplating forcing their way through the barrier. “What happened to the tokens,” I asked the man behind the window. “Fewer buses, breakdowns, too many passengers” were offered as excuses. “Come after half an hour” is what I was told. A policeman on duty pestered him to hurry up before the crowd got violent. He started making frantic calls to the man responsible for recovering tokens from the machine, who apparently was moonlighting somewhere and was not taking calls.
We got onto the platform eventually, where men and women have separate entrances. A courteous volunteer offered to let me know in time that my wife had boarded, so I could too. A bus arrived in 15 minutes. No one could get in or get out. One thought there were no passengers for the stop. We discovered later that it is hard to get in and harder to get out. We were able to push into the next bus. I could not get past the automatic door and would have been sandwiched, had I not quickly trampled on the feet of the bystanders. There I was for a few minutes, then pushed and tossed around until I found the back of a seat to lean on. The roof support I noticed had more load than it could take. The woman occupying the seat wanted to leave at the next stop but couldn’t. Sardined for the next 10 minutes, I was unable to breathe and wanted to get out quickly. However, I was too squashed by fellow travellers to be able to reach for my cell to tell my wife to do the same.
Resigned to fate, I closed my eyes. Other than the passengers crammed together, I could not see anything anyway. As visibility improved slightly beyond the shrine of Data Ganj Bakhsh, I noticed that a number of crossings were still unprotected. From there to Shahdara, the last stop, it felt like any other bus on the road. The exit machine at Shahdara was stuck. Tokens were collected manually and the passengers had to squeeze through an extremely narrow space. My wife had a similar sardine-like experience on the women’s side. Stares and sexist comments from men were in addition. A large crowd was battling to enter the single bus at Shahadara to go towards Gajumata. We, however, took the good old rickshaw to head home.

Lets not criticize for the sake of criticizing. This is a great step by PMLN setup to give something back to the people. This is not perfect, but atleast is a small step in the right direction. I hope CMs in Sindh and other provinces learn from this example rather than sleeping all day long, unaware of the conditions of their people.
As mentioned by some of the other people here, during rush hours, sometimes it gets unbelievebly crowded in metros (in pretty much all metropolitan cities). So, this is no surprise, all we need to do is to understand that queues are a natural outcome of big cities (such as Lahore, Karachi etc.), we as a nation just need to become more patient.
I am not a big fan of PMLN, nor will vote for them, but this act of the govt did impress me. and it will be better if columnists start appreciating what deserves to be appreciated.,...and come out of their shortsightedness by bringing in their personal liking or disliking for a particualr person/political party into their analysis.

I have used public transport in London a lot and the buses and the Tube can get incredibly crowded during the rush hour on some busy routes. However, people have the civility and the patience to allow everyone to travel in relative comfort. Also, everyone knows in a place like London that any troublemakers will end up facing consequences. It is no secret that patience is in short supply in Lahore because peoples' psyche is built around treating any opportunity (and bus!!) as the last one. Can't really blame them because of the widespread social injustice but hopefully things will improve once officials and politicians start treating people with the dignity they deserve. And that, Respected CM, requires a lot, lot more than splashing peoples' money as you wish. There is no doubt people of Lahore deserve to travel with dignity but that's not the only and, indeed, not the first thing they require.
Lolz ... this was bound to happen. Such projects look good on nations which have surpassed the levels of at least providing the basic necessities to its people. Educate the public first so they are civilized enough to make such a transition.
lol.. first we should deserve and than we should desire.. we don;t have the ethics to move in a bus, how we could adapt ourselves to a metro one... ignorance is goin to crush us
"Why can’t we do it in Lahore?" This question says it all. Sharif brothers are for one city only not the whole province. No wonder there are demands for another province. In addition Sharif has a thing about transport like yellow cabs and now buses.
Best way to earn money is to sell all steel from ur private steel mills to govt at high rates!!!!
educate the people first. inculcate some civility inside them somehow. then you can start all sorts of fancy buses for them.
@Tayyab: Lack of experience should have been countered by training, buses have been around for decades and statistics need to be used with projected demand/supply and load measures before wasting billions of Rs. on a half-baked project.
Bad luck for you Dr. Sb. While complaining for rush in the bus, it would have been better if you had compared it with rush hours in London metro or in any major world city. With 1,35,000+ people travelling as of yesterday in only 45 buses at max, rush is bound to happen until more buses arrive.
Regarding cleanliness, disorder, lack of respect for woman etc. I hope our people learn to use this facility like decent citizens. We know our people with some regulation can do it as we saw in Motorway. Critics should understand that projects take time to mature even after completion especially when our people have no experience of running such systems.
