An inspiring double century by captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni put India on top as they finished with a 135-run lead against Australia on the third day of the first Test in Chennai yesterday.

Dhoni’s maiden Test double-ton helped his team end the day at 515 for eight.

India skipper shared 128 in 26 overs for the fifth wicket with Virat Kohli (107), who also fell victim to a Lyon delivery as he attempted an aggressive launch over the top and was caught at mid-on by Mitchell Starc.  Earlier, Australia were bowled out for 380 in the first innings.

“If he (Dhoni) bats like that you don’t need to say much,” said Kohli, according to The Canberra Times. “It was a brilliant effort by him, especially after coming in from the fall of Tendulkar.”

“We needed to capitalise at that point in time, we needed a big partnership and he strung in a good partnership with me and then carried on the way he did. When he is in flow, he can hit the ball a mile and we all saw that. He can totally take the game away from you. That was a great example of his ability to hit the ball cleanly.”
