The caretaking leaders

Letter February 20, 2013
The news that Mr Hafeez Shaikh may be upwardly propelled comes as no surprise.

KARACHI: The news that Mr Hafeez Shaikh may be upwardly propelled comes as no surprise. After the sterling job of  ‘taking care’ of Pakistan’s finances and economy from the Pervez Musharraf era to near extinction during the current regime’s rule, he is well-suited to complete the job as caretaker prime minister. The credentials gained in the execution of these two jobs will ensure a happy and possibly more lucrative slot in one of Washington’s many world economic control centres. If nothing else, he could, if I am not mistaken, like so many of our previous economic and political caretakers, end up retiring in some comfortable Western watering hole from where he can pontificate on what ails Pakistan’s progress.
