KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) restrained on Monday the National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) from offering permanent jobs to 1,509 employees hired on temporary contracts. The stay order came on a petition of the National Bank of Pakistan Officers Welfare Association. Syed Mehmood Alam Rizvi, the association’s lawyer, argued that offering permanent contracts was in violation of the rules and constitution. The employees offered permanent jobs were appointed temporarily but on a salary double to that of other officers and who had been serving the organisation for over 20 years. The secretary of finance has, however, directed NBP’s president to appear before the cabinet sub-committee on February 19 so that the permanent jobs could be offered to the temporary employees. Issuing notice to NBP, finance secretary and establishment division for March 13, the judges directed them not to offer permanent employment.
