Religious Rites: Chanan Pir festival starts

The festival is organised every year in February and March.

BAHAWALPUR: The Chanan Pir festival started here on Friday. Auqaf Department officials Hafiz Muhammad Sadiq and Dr Muhammad Yaseen gave the traditional bath (ghusal) to the shrine.

The urs started with recitation from the Holy Quran and naat khawani. Lamps were lit at the shrine in the night.

The festival is organised every year in February and March.

People from all over the country attend it. Chanan Pir was the son of Sandharan of Jaysalmeer.

A local legend says he was reciting Quran at the time of his birth. He was abandoned in the desert but survived.

He died fighting a Hindu raja.
