SUKKUR:

Along with references to Benazir Bhutto and Sindhi Sufi poets, the chief of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz attempted on Thursday to woo the people of Sindh by censuring President Asif Ali Zardari and his party.

Addressing a public rally in Naudero near Larkana Thursday afternoon, Nawaz Sharif told participants that President Zardari had cheated the people of Sindh and the Pakistan Peoples Party government had failed to fulfill its obligations.

The PML-N chief’s rally comes a day after reports quoted President Zardari claiming that he had saved his ‘friend’ Nawaz from being hanged by former president Pervez Musharraf.

President Zardari maintained that he became ‘friends’ with Nawaz after the latter was imprisoned by Musharraf following the 1999 coup.

The PML-N chief, however, said on Thursday that had President Zardari done something for the welfare of the people of Sindh, he would have stood shoulder to shoulder with him.

Many governments have come and gone, but nothing has changed for Sindh and Sindhis, said Nawaz, adding that Sindhis had voted the PPP into power with high hopes. But today, he added, the people of the province don’t have jobs and there is no development work – such as the establishment of universities and schools, hospitals and roads – in sight.

Nawaz went on to say that once in power, his party will open opportunities for employment and prosperity throughout the country in general and Sindh in particular. He said that unlike the incumbent government, there were no corruption charges against his government.

The PML-N chief reiterated that the government had miserably failed to restore peace in Karachi and Balochistan.

He also hit out at the PPP government for failing to arrest the murderers of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto despite a lapse of five years. He added that the people of Sindh have now woken up from deep slumber and would not vote for those who cheated them.

Sardar Mumtaz Ali Bhutto, Syed Ghous Ali Shah and others also spoke on the occasion. During the rally,  PML-N member Dr Noor Din Bhutto presented a gold crown to Nawaz and Mumtaz Bhutto.

Meanwhile, Mumtaz Bhutto’s son-in-law Rizwan Keehar also announced joining the party.
