As a fierce debate rages over the morality of a special day dedicated to love between conservatives and progressives, a group of youth celebrated Valentine’s Day in a unique style.
A few dozen members of “The Do Good Mob” showed their appreciation for the sanitation staff of the Capital Development Authority (CDA) by gifting dry fruit, clothes and cards to workers on Thursday.
The Do Good Mob called itself “a volunteer initiative by conscientious young residents of Islamabad” according to a press release issued by the group. The group’s members include students as well as professionals.
“The purpose of this activity was to show respect and gratitude to people who work so hard to keep Islamabad clean,” said Fariha Baloch, a founding member of the volunteer group.
Another member, Javaria Ahmed, posted on The Do Good Mob’s Facebook page:” Roaming around Islamabad on a cloudy day, expressing our gratitude to hardworking and dedicated CDA sanitation team, gratifying feeling after putting smiles on their faces.”
The Do Good Mob Facebook page was formed on January 1, 2012, and was used to mobilise the youth for the unique Valentine’s Day celebration.
The Do Good Mob’s attempt is the latest in a series of efforts by the capital’s young residents to appreciate government workers and help with civic duties. For example, volunteers for Project Clean Up for Peace swept the streets in the aftermath of the YouTube video protests last September.
