For a man who has survived six personal attacks on his life, Mauripur SHO Shafiq Tanoli is a man still determined to fight crime.
He is enemies with the most dangerous men in the city. He is wanted by intimidating political activists, notorious gang war mafia and even ruthless militants.
“My life is in God’s hands and not in the hands of the criminals,” said the 45-year-old cop. SHO Tanoli heads one of the most dangerous stations in the city - the beige-coloured Mauripur police station situated next to shops selling soft drinks and beach balls.
Only a week ago, Tanoli survived a bomb attack near Hawkes’ Bay Road. “I was unhurt but a constable was injured,” he told The Express Tribune from his small room at the station. For the time being, Tanoli has let go off his police uniform. He comes on duty wearing a white crisp shalwar kameez. “Wearing the wardi [uniform] these days is like inviting criminals to you. I dress up like an ordinary person and travel with three men wearing the same clothes so that I don’t stand out.”
The number of attacks against policemen has gone up in recent months. The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan states that in 2012, around 133 police men were killed on duty as compared to 74 officers in 2011.
And in some instances, such as Tanoli’s, family members were also forced to bear the brunt. Tanoli’s younger brother, Naveed, was killed the same day when Tanoli, the then SHO of Supermarket Police Station, arrested the murderers of Geo News reporter Wali Khan Babar.
“After we had held a press conference announcing the capture of Wali’s murderers, I received a phone call saying, ‘You have caught our men. Now we will send you a gift’.”
Two hours later, his 18-year-old brother was shot dead in Gulshan-e-Iqbal.
“That was the most difficult time of my life. I had no idea that they would go that far. But I resumed my duty four days after the killing. I wanted to show the criminals that I would not bow down.”
The man, who is determined to fight violence, joined the police force in 1989 when he was in his early twenties. He was also active during the army operation in the 1990s - a time when officers were scared to mention they were from the police force.
Tanoli has also worked for the CID, and was involved in the arrest of Lyari’s Arshad Pappu, inviting the wrath of his followers. He has been attacked twice in Pak Colony, twice in Mauripur, once each in Liaquatabad and Sachal.
“In Sachal, we received a tip-off about a mafia, but when we reached there we realised that the informer had sided up with the criminals.” The officer was hit by two bullets in his stomach and was in bed for 15 days.
Since he has taken control of the Mauripur station in July last year, the police force has been regularly targeted by the militants who have settled down in the neighbourhood. Sometimes grenades are hurled at the officer’s vans, sometimes it lands outside their home. “No one wants to be posted here. We carry out operations against the militants, arrest them and retrieve weapons from them. In return, they target us.”
As a handful of police officers stood guard outside the station, Tanoli said that the station covers a massive area of 172 km. “We only have 74 officers posted for such a large area. We need more force and more weapons.”
As Tanoli gets up to conclude an operation against heavily armed men in Musharraf Colony, he gives a small smiles and says, “These days every time I leave home, I tell my wife to have a good look in case I don’t come back. The situation is getting worse.”

The solution to Karachi's crime is a bullet to the back of the head for both robbesr and the corrupt cops who support them. People like Tanoli should be in charge
@Truth Please donot quote LAPD . Do you know what scotland yard and other English police forces did during riots between 6th and 10th december 2011? As of 15th August 3100 people were arrested and 1000 charged. Courts did extended hours. The word from British PM was to use IRON hand. There is a crisis in Karachi. In short term we need IRON hand and in long term we need community police.
@ truth
And you think everyone who works in LAPD, NYPD and London Met are from the respective cities?. Please enter the civilized as well as globalized world. It shouldn't matter where a person is from, if he's good at what he does, he deserves to be there.
What would you say about the Army then? More than half of the army personnel hail from Punjab and KPK, how can you trust them to protect you?
We need to educate people about it, rather than rationalizing it.
And please, LAPD, despite being so good per say, still cannot control the gang activity in LA. The same goes for NYPD and London Met.
@manish rohera: Are you out of your mind? That already happened in the 90s and resulted in thousands of innocents being killed by law enforcement agencies. Wake up and enter the civilized world, barbarians like you should be examined and kept under strict checks.
The real solution lies in community policing like any megapolis of the civilized world. NYPD, LAPD or London Met should be used as examples. The police should be under the Mayor and owned by local people. Why would any Karachiite trust policemen from Punjab, KP & even interior Sindh to run their affairs? Anti-Karachi bias has been the biggest reason for trust deficit between the people of Karachi and the LEAs.
Very good and timely story Rabia.
Without wasting a day, goverment should equipe and encourage karachi police because these officer may lose the confidence in state institutions if present situation continues even for few months.
With serious threats from taliban, different mafias and militant wings of political parties, such police officers in Karachi are our real heroes.
Only way to control mafia, gang or what ever, follow AB TAK 36. Take war to them & eliminate the threat. In that case CJ need to look other way. Bravo Mr. Tanoli hats of to you.
Salute you Sir...may Allah swt protect you & your family...Aameen.
Pakistan should be very proud that, we have amazingly brave, selfless, duty bound, people who perform much above the call of duty. Salute to your bravery, may he serve as a good example to all those who work under him, with him and above him. There are good people in this country, and these good people need to be recognized, appreciated, lauded for their work. I hope what he says about the mafias, the political thugs, the extremists, etc is taken seriously, and action is taken against these people.
@Moiz Hussain: The only thing short in Pakistan is funding for the right causes. As and when we are able to curtail corruption so that it becomes an exception, rather than the rule, and when we tax all those "untaxables" to the appropriate levels, we will have enough funds to not only have a large and well paid and provided for Police Force, but also for electricity generation, gas exploration, free tractors and other automation for farming for all, roads, mass transport, education, medical support, etc. etc. etc.
Only 2 items to work on: Corruption and Taxation. That should be the very simple agenda of all Pakistan for the next 10 years. Everything else is already provided for.
Tanoli is a Hero spread this on F.B,
It is not entirely up to these brave officers to take care of the city. Considering the situation, people should come out and actively pursue a campaign for the safety of this officer and his family. Otherwise, it won't be soon that we'll be hearing out a sad story with bravery turning into just another futile statistic of this city. We need to raise a voice and exert people's power to fulfill the demands that this officer is asking for.
If men and weapon are needed, they should be provided. Government's apathy will just take more lives. We need to knock the doors and ask for what is needed. Only this collaboration b/w people and the forces will make a strong force against this mafias and militants.
Excellent report. Thank you Rabia Ali for reporting this.
May Allah keep you safe. Good work ET. Media should highlight rare heros in our police force.
Wow! great! Keep it up! God bless you!
he even looks like a tuff man...keep it up Sir
i believe karachi should do what mumbai police did in 90's form an ATS no arrest no warrant encounter on the spot believe me in just 2-3 years it will show results and on a personal note please dont glorify officers in media they can be direct target of criminals.Tanoli is a man great gallant a salute from india sir.
