No end in sight: Three political workers among six killed

Party officials deny the men belonged to their party.

KARACHI: Three men, who may have been political activists, were among the six people shot dead on Monday.

Adnan Sharafat, Shakir Gul Muhammad and Waqas, were shot dead and two others, Arif and Humayun, were wounded when at least half a dozen men on four motorcycles fired at them when they were sitting outside Haji Allah Buksh Welfare office, Gulshan-e-Maymar, on Monday.

Police officials alleged that the deceased were members of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), however, the party has denied the claim. The deceased and injured were taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

DSP Qamar Ahmed told The Express Tribune that a sub machinegun, some 9mm and TT pistols, 20 bullet shells of sub machine gun, five bullet shells of 9mm pistols and four shells of TT pistols, were confiscated. The police arrived and they have yet to register the case.

A 40-year-old police officer, ASI Zulfiqar Ali, who was posted in the intelligence wing, was shot dead while he was on duty in Sherpao Colony, near Quaidabad police station. DSP Iftikhar Lodhi said that ASI Ali had been shot at least seven times. The deceased had currently been investigating the two bomb blasts in Quaidabad on January 24 claiming the lives of DSP Kamal Mangan, ASI Akbar and two others.

A seminary teacher affiliated with Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat, 40-year-old Qari Muhammad Asim, was shot dead on University Road in Gulshan-e-Iqbal. According to Sacchal police, Asim was shot on his way home from teaching the Quran to children in a bungalow in Gulshan-e-Iqbal. The spokesperson of the religious organisation, Maulana Saeed Akbar Farooqi, accepted that the deceased victim was affiliated with their organisation.
