Instead of paying heed to these emergent problems, however, a new technological approach was discovered which claimed it could insert genes from different species into crops for helping them resist disease, droughts and provide even better yields. While some of these genetic modifications target cash crops like cotton, it is the use of genetic modification (GM) technology in common food crops, such as corn, tomatoes and eggplant, which have stirred up the most controversy.
Powerful agribusiness lobbies have ensured the prevalence of GM crops in the US. Numerous other countries are, however, taking steps to either ban GM food crops outright, or to place different sorts of restrictions on their use.
Peru is among the countries to have recently prohibited the import, production and use of genetically modified foods in order to safeguard the country’s agricultural diversity and prevent cross-pollination with non-GM crops. Ireland banned growing of GM crops back in 2009.
Russia decided to place restrictions on the import of Monsanto’s GM corn. After a recent French study linking GM corn to cancer, France has also placed a temporary ban on GM corn. Japan has also restricted cultivation of GM crops. In 2010, Switzerland extended a moratorium on genetically modified animals and plants, banning GMs until 2013.
Other countries haven’t banned GM crops altogether, but they also place restrictions on them. Germany, for instance, requires farmers growing GM crops to maintain a minimum distance from conventional farms and holds them liable for damages if conventional crops are contaminated via cross-pollination.
In the case of Pakistan, BT cotton has already pervaded our agrarian economy, while multinational companies and government officials remain locked in a tussle about how to best ensure BT cotton patent rights. Moreover, GM maize trials were given an official go ahead, some two years ago. Since maize is an important food crop and is used extensively to produce animal feed, this process has raised several health related concerns.
Pakistan has also been thinking about introducing GM labelling to supposedly protect consumer rights. However, the capacity of resource-constrained countries like ours, to manage GM labelling, is highly problematic.
There are, however, powerful multinational agribusiness interests, as well as larger farmers who collude with them. They criticise placing regulations on GM crops as being unnecessary and counterproductive to the goal of producing more crops. While the growing reliance on GM food crops may help increase their own profitability, its adverse impacts on existing crop diversity, human health and even on prevailing disparities in our rural areas cannot be discounted.

An article that is contemplating me right now.
Monsanto wants to alter the natural DNA of everything & patent EVERYTHING, including pigs. Check out this video. Wake up People. While we are distracted with nonsense they are busy causing havoc in the food supply. Stop Monsanto's insane, unethical reign. FDA, US gov't & Monsanto are GUILTY of poisoning US citizens.

Interesting and worth thinking about by our concerned people.
PS; analysis in this article is based on contents taken from articles written by top conspiracy theorists.Author, therefore is not bound to give further explanation as to why and how. Thank you.
Doesn't take much research to determine that many of the objections to GM boil down to "not invented here" which is definitely the case in Europe where GM suddenly becomes OK so long as Monsanto isn't involved. As far as the "cancer" allegation that study is bogus and doesn't deserve mention in this article -- just more chaff to obscure and confuse. The legitimate concerns of GM come from the organic supporters who seldom are concerned with cost. Suppose the issue boils down to whether you want low cost food or not. Lastly - the USA still remains the breadbasket for the World and much of the food they export is GM - if its unsafe then we have yet to see any fallout.
It is high time, people who wants to study the pros and cons of GM crops study the physiology of human body, how the nutrients are broken down and absorbed, and also how plants do photosynthesize.
GM crops creating cancer: naturally the author is not curious to ask how- if only we know how the cancer is caused, we do not have to spend billions in cancer research and health care- and the claim GM crops cause cancer gives an unique opportunity to understand how the cancer is caused, alas, if only they can tell us!
GM crops or hybrid crops whatever the terminology one may want to use, is occurring naturally through cross pollination and GM crop is a natural next step when one understands the plant physiology.
The resistance to GM crops is pure and simple: give us the seed freely. Everything else is propaganda.
Man is doing monoculture agriculture ever since he put the plough on the earth. Just look around and count how many grain, fruit, vegetable crops are produced in each part of the earth before the arrival of GM crops! Each variety is only handful, like domesticated animals.
Native cotton or GM cotton ? This is not even a question in monoculture agriculture practice.
GMO's are poison to the body. It's like putting motor oil on your salad - totally foreign & toxic. The body creates inflammation to deal with the toxic offender. The US gov't & FDA are responsible for sickening the US population with Ibs, allergies, immune problems, & cancer caused by GMO's. How did we get here? Bush senior deregulated Monsanto. No testing for safety. They trusted the company who made agent orange to make our food. The US gov't & Monsanto had 2 things in common that brought them together, greed & a desire for world domination. Now, everyone is sick and toxic. When is someone going to do the right thing & cut GMO's out of US agriculture altogether. Never mind labeling, this is beyond that. There will not be a productive US if everyone is sick. And, how could you let this happen to children? I watched the Born Legacy recently. It reminded me of Monsanto & the US gov't. Execute the plan, all morals be damned.
Wow "recent French study linking GM corn to cancer"!!! To bad the author didn't research the fact that this study has been roundly rejected by so many in the worldwide scientific community! The French national academies of Agriculture, Medicine, Pharmacy, Science, Technology, and Veterinary Studies have all called this a report a "scientific non-event"! Adding to the absolute weakness of this so-called study is the fact that the report's author REFUSES TO RELEASE THE RAW DATA THAT THE REPORT IS BASED ON!!!! This prevents any other scientist from reviewing the work to see how reported conclusions were reached !
