Altaf Hussain calls for return of nazims

MQM called on the government to restore the local government system for a term of one to two years.

KARACHI: MQM chief Altaf Hussain on Wednesday called on the government to restore local government system for a term of one to two years.

Altaf Hussain was addressing a meeting of the MQM leaders at the party head quarters, Nine Zero, in Karachi. He said the country is passing through a tough time while politicians are busy wasting time with photo sessions.

Altaf said most parliamentarians have still not visited their constituencies that remain submerged by floods.

The MQM chief demanded the government to restore all the Nazims saying they are the only ones who worked for the people's welfare.

The local bodies were dissolved in February, 2009 to be replaced by administrators across Pakistan. The federal and provincial governments had announced that an amended local bodies act will be passed.

According to a previous report, most political parties believe flood relief effort would have been far more effective and efficient if the local government system headed by nazims was still in place.

Sultan Ahmed. | 14 years ago | Reply revolution has attributed to the fat of this country. in the first instance when i read the statement of Altaf Hussain i came to the conclusion that he has come who really interpreter the wishes of the people but now began to talk about Nazim System, that is old one. It mean Altaf Hussain has changed his mind.

Liaquat Ali | 14 years ago | Reply Anything the MQM says makes sense. The reason is that they think before they say unlike the other parties' representatives who seem to just fart out their parties' policies and stands as they go. They are just too busy minting money to talk political sense.

Good SUPPORT for Nazims ,the most of nazims in Sindh flood relief effected area belongs to uperclass ( landlors, jagerdars, peer, shah ,businessmen) please ref list of nazims in sindh. Can they (nazims) serve effective to poor people , farmers of sindh flood area ?. Yes they are still in area and still they have control of their own lands and jagires. thanks

Give power and resources to the people who are from the community with vested interest in the betterment of the city and make them accessible and answerable.

I wonder if these die hard parliament chanters have ACTUALLY read what democracy is rather than what they hear and memorize from TV shows.
