Opening batsman Kieran Powell rued his inability to lead West Indies to a win against Australia despite making a career-best 83 off 90 balls in the second One-Day International (ODI) on Sunday.

Powel was involved in a 126-run, fourth-wicket stand with Dwayne Bravo (45) while chasing a  score of 267 but his side faltered at 212 off 38.1 overs, to slip to a 54-run defeat at the WACA Stadium.

“We lost early wickets but we still decided to back ourselves to grind it out,” lamented Powell, according IBN Live. “I felt I played well, but I was disappointed I could not take the team to victory — that is the most important thing when you’re playing for your country, you want to be on the winning side.”

Watson back for West Indies ODIs

Meanwhile, all-rounder Shane Watson was named yesterday in Australia’s squad for this week’s two ODIs against the West Indies following his recovery from a calf injury.

Watson will replace Usman Khawaja as Australia seek to wrap up the five-game series in Wednesday’s third ODI in Canberra after winning the opening two matches in Perth over the weekend.

“Shane has recovered from his injury and we look forward to seeing him get back to his best,” said chairman of selectors John Inverarity.
