Dale Steyn took six for eight in 8.1 overs as Pakistan failed to match their previous low - 53 against Australia in Sharjah in 2002/03.
South Africa led by 411 runs at the close with seven second innings wickets still in hand.
Openers Graeme Smith and Alviro Peterson (27) raced to 82 before the latter skied an Umar Gul delivery and Mohammed Hafeez completed the catch.
Smith reached his 37th test 50 before he was caught behind by Sarfraz Ahmed two runs later and Jacques Kallis (7) perished trying to force the scoring rate when he was caught in the deep by Asad Shafiq.
Hashim Amla (50 not out) and AB de Villiers (63 not out) then put on 108 runs to take South Africa to the close. Steyn dismissed Mohammed Hafeez (six) in his first over of the day as the opener got a faint edge that went straight through to de Villiers, one of a joint South African record of six dismissals in the innings for the keeper.
Debutant Nasir Jamshed (2) was trapped in front by Steyn and, although the batsman challenged the decision, the third umpire upheld the dismissal.
Younus Khan (0) lasted just five balls before he pushed forward to a full Steyn delivery and edged to Smith at first slip to leave Pakistan reeling at 12 for three.
Azhar Ali and captain Misbahul Haq took the score to 36 when Azhar (13) fended a vicious bouncer from Kallis to de Villiers.
Misbah (12) became Kallis' second victim in controversial circumstances after Billy Bowden gave a caught behind decision not out and South Africa reviewed. There appeared to be no evidence of a nick on the hot spot replay but third umpire Steve Davis from Australia chose to overturn the decision.
Asad (1) was next to go as he chased a wide delivery from Vernon Philander and succeeded only in edging to de Villiers. Two balls later and a reckless Gul (0) flayed at another wide delivery off the same bowler, Smith pouching the catch.
By lunch, Pakistan had stumbled to 40 for seven and just two balls after the interval Saeed Ajmal (1) became Steyn's fourth victim, this time de Villiers pulling off a wonderful diving catch in front of first slip.
Steyn got his fifth when he induced an edge from Sarfraz (2), before the sorry innings came to a close when Rahat Ali edged to Faf du Plessis in the slips and was out for a duck. Steyn was once again the wicket taker.
It was the third time in two seasons that South Africa bowled out opponents for less than 50. Australia were bowled out for 47 in 2011/12 and New Zealand were dismissed for 45 earlier this season. Both matches were in Cape Town.

@abhi: You are funny....really
this is revenge of India, we presented you such an inferior bowling attack that your batsman couldn't take it when faced with some decent bowling attack.
@Truth detector: I did not mean to be rude, but one has to be careful with him. The best way forward would be to watch his videos while he bowls against the other IPL teams and work around that.
@Dr Priyanka Good for you. Sleep happy tonight.
Dale Steyn plays for the Hyderabad team in the IPL. He is everybody's fav in Hyderabad.
So called best bowling attack in the world faces a real best bowling attack. Even Indian tailenders B team can make more that that.
Finally this series will mark the ending era of Mr TUK TUK for good. Also YK should be kicked out as well. If these two experienced batsmen cannot score then one shouldn't expect anything from the likes of Azhar, Asad, Jamshed etc
indian trolls here....hehehe still defeated u sorry lot at ur own stadium.
pakistan batsmen were against world best fast bowler. This is a good lesson for young team and pakistan are mentally not prepared to face such a hostile attack.do not feel panic
@Sudheer: your analysis is spot on except your conclusion. Historically pak always had good bowling attack but bad batting whereas indians always had mediocre bowling attack but super batsmen. India only had spining trio in 70s who won them few test matches on spining wickets. However note that its bowlers who win you matches, rarely batsmen. Good batting can draw you matches. Exception being a tast victory by india chasing 400+ in west indies.
The bookies betting benchmark was less than 100 but men in green made it much safer ie less than 50. Remember the huge no ball incident and this one is similar.
Inshallah Pakistan will win despite BCCI's conspiracy..
south africa are chokers...and this is what they will remain..with no major world cup under their belt they cannot call themselves world champs....pakistan only played around 9 tests since 2010..and under the same period teams like s.a played around 20..the more matches pakistan get, they l improve for sure..icc should now realise this..the whole cricket lobby revolves around england, india,s.a and australia..they dnt want to see other teams grow.so cricket only being played by just 10 teams around..see hockey and football
Pakistan must give attention on batting or stop calling itself first class team
Lets look forward to next game, this is over. Pakistan looses by 300-350 runs..
amazing so far no one has mentioned Umar Akmal.
Pathetic performance
@Lala Gee: In none of these matches did South Africa have trouble batting. This has nothing to do with the quality of the pitches !!
I think RAW from India or Narendar Modi or BJP is behind this loss of Pakistan. Must be a conspiracy.
Oh dear - only 49. It must be a conspiracy by the BCCI, ICC, ECB, PCA, CIA, MOSSAD, RAW, MI5 and perhaps KFC.
Too much Biryani and not enough net practice by the batsmen. When we have the best bowling attacks in cricket, how come our batsmen are scared sh*less of opposing fast bowlers.
As the reasonable man like @Mirza said above, both teams bowled and batted on the same pitch and the fragility of Pak team has, mercilessly, been exposed once again. Pak fans who have a tendency to go berserk at a single series win or loss to declare their team either as world beaters or simply as a deplorable bunch of a treacherous group of individuals, who can only be beaten by bribing them. I think the latter reasoning is much more insulting to Pakistan as a nation, which portrays a picture where every Pak citizen is ready to sell him/herself and is just waiting for a right price. The tragedy is that Pak fans don't realize this simple truth. Their comments only end up by further humiliating Pakistan on the world arena. Pakistan is a good bowling side but, its batting, as always, is just pathetic and you can never win a game of cricket without good batting capabilities.
I think its conspiracy against MR.TUK TUK.
wow pakistan create new record.
Both teams played on the same wicket, didn't they? Pakistan never fared well against fast bowlers under these conditions. Their bowling proved mediocre and batting collapsed. The better team which plays better in the match deserves to win it is that simple. If only the experienced Afridi were there! hahaha
It was on the cards. Feeling sorry for the our bowlers they bowl their heart out. But batting as usual betrayed us.
remember Indians are next to tour SA later this year....so TEAM Blue watch out after NZ. AUS AND PAK it will be u people to get out below 50...may be u will break the lowest ever total record of 26......
Get ready for an 800 runs target. Pak target should be a draw
No need to press panic button. Apart from 1-2 players, none of them have played in South Africa. Ideal preparation would have been to send players 2/3 weeks early and play 2-3 side matches. Inn defeat is not possible now since SA has opted for extending the lead. Pak should give good fight in second Inn and focus on 2nd test.
This is conspiracy by Indian Lobby the BCCI.............
@Diggvijay Singh: Analyzed eactly like "DigVijay Singh". Keep it up.
@Diggvijay Singh: "Hope Pakistan gives a good fight in the second innings and doesn’t suffer innings defeat. " Pakistan having an innings defeat will be the biggest miracle of it all that the cricket world has ever seen!
Team Green,, hohohoho,,,, hehehehehe,,,,,,
Blame the wicket. Or may be it was fixed !
@Lala Gee: Even South Africa played on the same pitch mubarak ho south africa... hehehe
@Lala Gee: Agree with you; when we prepare tracks that turn too much they say these are not capable of playing cricket and when they have vigrously bouncing and moving pitches at much higher pace than that of spining tracks of sub continent; they say sub continent players dont play pace well at there conditions specially in south africa.
Haha, I am loving it :)
Its cricket..
"It was the third time in two seasons that South Africa bowled out opponents for less than 50. Australia were bowled out for 47 in 2011/12 and New Zealand were dismissed for 45 earlier this season."
ICC must ensure that the quality of the pitches for test matches meet certain standards, otherwise, there is no point in calling these matches 'Test Match'.
Latest Android App 'Voice Of Pakitan'. Every pakistani must install this
Pakistan still did a good job to restrict SA to 253. Even NZ batting found it hard to survive against the fast bowling of Steyn, Philander and Morkel. Hope Pakistan gives a good fight in the second innings and doesn't suffer innings defeat.
This match is fixed
