Weak election commission?

Letter January 27, 2013
None of the ECP representatives demanded to see our CNICs nor did they ask for our CNIC numbers.

KARACHI: A lot is being said by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) about completing the process of verification of voters’ list before the general elections. In this regard, I wish to bring to the attention of the Chief Election Commissioner, Justice (retd) Fakhruddin G Ebrahim, the following.

I am a resident of Karachi. Last week, three people who claimed to be representatives of the ECP came to my house for the purpose of voters’ list verification. Due to it being a working day, I was not at home. My wife and 20-year-old son attended them. They asked my wife the name of the head of the family, total number of family members and their ages.

None of the ECP representatives demanded to see our CNICs nor did they ask for our CNIC numbers. I would like to ask the honourable chief election commissioner if this is the normal procedure adopted when verifying voters’ lists? Will I be able to cast my vote in the next general elections (if held) with such a weak system of verification by the ECP?
