Judge Harry D Leinenweber of the US District Court sentenced Headley to 35 years in jail followed by five years supervised release. The sentence was awarded after the prosecution asked for the sentencing as opposed to life imprisonment as Headley had confessed and turned witness for the prosecution.
He had been accused of conspiring and plotting the Mumbai attacks in November 2008, the plot to attack the offices of a Danish newspaper and providing material support to the LeT.
According to a statement issued by the prosecution, Headley pleaded guilty to all 12 counts against him in March 2010. He had been cooperating with authorities after his arrest.
At the sentencing, a victim of the Mumbai 26/11 attacks also addressed the court.
Last week another US court had convicted and sentenced Tahawwur Rana, a Pakistani expatriate, to 14 years in jail for providing material support to the LeT. He is a friend of Headley's.
US govt.’s position
According to the US government’s position paper made available to the media ahead of the sentencing, the government said that information provided by Headley had helped the US government and its allies in combating terrorism.
“In addition to providing insight into the personnel, structure, methods, abilities and plans of Lashkar, Headley took active steps to further the investigation into other terrorists.
Headley’s cooperation assisted the Government in filing criminal charges against at least seven other individuals, and his testimony helped to secure the conviction of one co-defendant.” The paper said that Headley had also cooperated with Indian law enforcement, and they expect his cooperation to continue in the future.
“The government submits that imposing a sentence of 30 to 35 years’ imprisonment strikes a fair and just balance between the despicable nature of his crimes and the significant value of his cooperation.”
52-year-old David Headley was arrested in 2009 in Chicago. In his testimony during the trial of his friend Tahawwur Rana in 2011, Headley said that he had been trained by members of the ISI when he was part of LeT, and that his handlers were former ISI operatives.

We will never know the truth, because RAW/ISI/CIA and the Indian/Pakistan Governments are involved. Also, it looks as if Mr. Headely was tortured until he told them what they wished to hear. They have been working on him since 2009.
Only 35 years in jail is pretty sad. That man was responsible for the deaths of dozens!
I blame the US Govt. First they make ISI and Pakistani Army not answerable in court for this crime, now they have asked for a maximum punishment of 35 years. Really sad.
I am an Indian shocked to see that none of Pakistan reader comments on David Headley..I was still in hope that the educated people of Pakistan will accept the truth and will admit that the Mumbai attack was done by Pakistani based terrorist help of state.
I am an Indian shocked to see the that none of Pakistani readers comments on sentence to David Headley
Author "Headley said that he had been trained by members of the ISI when he was part of LeT, and that his handlers were former ISI operatives."
David headley is actually Dawood Gilani son of a Pakistani diplomat and an American woman. Headley and Rana played an important part in Bombay 26/11 attack.
If only we could hold the insane criminal masterminds and extremist supporters of terrorist militants, who are roaming freely within the country and some sadly are part of the Pak state, accountable.
Pakistan is also pleading to its courts for similar punishment to Hafeez Sayeed ...?
So far the Pakistani press has failed to apprise the citizens about the planning and conduct of the masterminds in the horrific 26/11 Mumbai massacre. They also failed in fact did not even try to ascertain the true facts even though the plot was local. It should be brought to the notice of readers that the only journalist who pursued the story with determination was Sebastain Rotella for Pro Publica the World leader in Investigative Journalism. The issue that needs serious debate is will the Pakistani citizens love for terrorists and violence ever end -- without it happening the terrorists and their collaborators can never be brought to Justice.
@American Desi: What utter nonsense. As Pakistanis we face the looming waves of suicide bombers and extremist nutjobs every day. The common Pakistani isn't some macabre anti-Indian psychopath - I still remember the widespread shock, dismay and condemnation the Mumbai attacks garnered from all corners of society. When people involved in domestic terrorist incidents are not prosecuted by the authorities here, how can you expect this to translate to the Mumbai attackers? We have a terrible anti-terrorism prosecution record and are paying the price for it.
Wrong! Wrong!! Wrong!!!
Headly is Mumbai attack helper.
Mumbai attack plotter is sitting snugly in Lahore enjoying state protection.
Mr Dr. Who are are wrong. Expecting punishment for LeT leaders is like expecting Al-Qaida sentencing Bin-laden.
He can't be a Muslim or a Pakistani - he is just a terrorist and got punished. Pakistan has contributed heavily towards eradication of terrorism - Osama is the biggest example.
Just a query please, now that the criminal proceedings are over, will the victims be allowed to sue for damages in a civil court against the Govt. of Pakistan, seeing the ISI has been named as being involved.
Kasab is dead in India, Gilani is sentenced in US. The actual criminals who perpetrated the attack are still on trial in Pakistan. 26/11 case in Pakistan is the test of will of Pakistan and its citizens to the world.
Gary
Well! Well!! Well!!! . One more "NON-STATE ACTOR" BITES THE DUST""" . Many more to go. . Cheers
How come Pakistan government never approached USA government to interrogate Dawood Gilani aka David to investigate his claims that some ISI elements were involved in the Mumbai 2008 terrorist attack planning?
@bond: Here is Pakistani link to terrorism overseas which includes 26/11 mumbai attack which resulted in the death of 190 people.
Pakistanis take full pride and credit if a person of Pakistani origin (even if he is not born in Pakistan) if he / she has received some global recognition for their good work. And the same Pakistanis are pretty much mute in at least deploring the act of this Pakistani origin man. This silent acceptance and even to quite a degree sinister pride for such people is the reason why Pakistan and Pakistanis ( I stress again, not any muslims) are hated the most in India. You guys have no heart even to deplore the act of this man. Pakistani conspiracy theorists rejoice. Awaiting your comments
@bond: I like how they tip-toed around that fact and did not mention it.
Pakistanis are getting famous every year around the world..
Justice served and the culprit admitted his crimes to get a lighter sentence. Pakistan is not going to demand his extradition to Pakistan. We are only interested in Afia not Hadley who has cooperated with the prosecution.
@bond: one more feather in some country's cap!
One more close connection between terrorism and Paksitan
He is 52 now. Will he come out of prison alive at 87? I hope not!
Congratulations US government and its justice system. Mr Daood Gilani Alias Headley will spend rest of his life in prison. US has done more to punish the perpetrators of Mumbai attack than even Indian government has done. The sad thing is , the master minds of the attack, those that organized it, trained people, funded Mr Daood Geelani alias Headley, are all free and protected by a state.
ET would have done greater service had it brought out Headley's Pakistani connection.
Another Terrorism Conspiracy with Pakistani Link....
He is a Pakistani American citizen. original name Daood Sayed Gilani
Pakistan should protest against it.
India can ask for extradition once he and his associates complete the sentence.
