Confiscated automobiles: Court orders auction of supardari vehicles

PESHAWAR:

The Peshawar High Court (PHC) has ordered to auction imported supardari vehicles and sell the scrap material of locally-manufactured vehicles. The money generated from sales of these vehicles will be deposited in a government account.

A division bench headed by PHC Chief Justice Dost Muhammad Khan and Justice Irshad Qaisar issued the orders.

Supardari vehicles are confiscated by law enforcement agencies if they are found being used in illegal activities or have been imported without paying custom duties.

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Excise and Taxation (E&T) department’s counsel Zia-ur-Rehman Khattak told the bench the court orders are being implemented and 89 supardari vehicles have been recovered.

While the process is ongoing, the E&T director general (DG) and secretary have been transferred, Khattak added. A new secretary has been appointed, but a DG has not been appointed as yet.

Justice Khan said the E&T minister’s driver was also arrested for driving a supardari vehicle in Attock and a case was registered. He ordered that a complete report be produced at the next hearing. The bench also ordered the E&T department to contact Federal Board of Revenue for legalising imported supardari vehicles and allotting registration numbers.

The case has been adjourned till February 27.
