PESHAWAR:

Jubilant to have earned a professional degree, Syed Shah Anwar seemed somewhat emotional to be parting with his friends at Sarhad University of Information Technology (SUIT).

“This is a special day for me and I vow to become a useful citizen in future,” said Shah, who was conferred a Master of Business Management at the university’s ninth convocation on Monday.

A total of 1,000 students graduated from the university in different graduate and postgraduate programmes this year. Clad in blue gowns, around 286 graduating students walked down the aisle of Pearl Continental hotel at the convocation ceremony. Eighteen students — five girls and 13 boys — got gold medals in various disciplines.

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Governor Masood Kausar conferred degrees and medals to the students. A large number of parents and guardians were also present on the occasion.

In his address, the governor and patron of the university, urged the private sector to help the government in educating the youth in K-P and Federally Administrated Tribal Areas (Fata) as a means to ensure a tolerant society.

“Youth comprise 45% of the population in FATA and if not educated, they could fall prey to extremism and terrorism,” he said, adding that only education could bring sustainable development to the region.

SUIT Vice President Javed Tipu said the university has been accredited by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and emphasized on the expansion of the university’s distant education network to Fata.

He added that the university has launched MS/MPhil programmes in pharmacy, electrical and civil engineering. He informed the governor that graduates of the university are serving the country at national and provincial levels in different capacities.

Wasil Khan, the only student to complete a doctorate degree this year, said, “The downfall and rise of the nations depend on education, which has been a major contributor in bringing positive changes in the lives of the individuals and development of nations.”
