HYDERABAD:

A young man killed his mother and stepfather in their sleep with an axe in Mirpurkhas on Sunday. He also tried to kill his two stepbrothers but they survived.

The deceased Salma Mari alias Saira Bano had converted to Islam six years ago before marrying Aachar Mari, her second husband. She was also Aachar’s second wife.

Her conversion, however, is not believed to be the cause of the attack. The suspect, 22-year-old Keeno Lal, used to visit his mother and stepfather regularly, said the family members. Younus Mari, 12, told the police that Keeno also tried to kill him but he managed to escape with his younger brother, five-year-old Pappu Mari.

“He used to pester my father for money. A few days back, Keeno asked my father for money but he refused,” said Younus. The young boys created noise to attract the neighbours’ attention but Keeno reportedly managed to escape, said DSP Umar Shahani.

According to the DSP, the suspect lives with his father in the neighbouring district, Umerkot.

The Umerkot police have been asked to raid his house to arrest the suspect. Niaz Muhamamd Mari, brother of Aachar, said that an FIR will be registered against Keeno after the burial.
