Punjab Governor Makhdoom Ahmed Mehmood announced on Saturday that only one province would be carved out in Punjab and a bill in this regard would be moved in the upcoming session of National Assembly (NA).
According to an official handout, the governor was presiding over a meeting of the core committee on the restoration of Bahawalpur province, which decided that only one Bahawalpur province will be created and that two divisions, Multan and DG Khan, would be incorporated in that province.
Participants of the committee included Punjab General Secretary Dr Wasim Akhtar, Tabish Alvari, Mamtaz Matiana, Hafiz Hussain Ahmad Madni and Political Advisor to the Governor Abdul Qadir Shaheen.
New province
Shaheen, while speaking to The Express Tribune, said that the parliamentary commission on the new province, led by Senator Farhatullah Bahar, is working to finalise the draft of the bill. He added that according to significant points of the bill, only one province will be carved out in Punjab.
The name of this province would be Bahawalpur, with its assembly and chief minister’s offices established in Bahawalpur city, while the governor house would be established in Multan. He added that the bill would be moved in the upcoming session of the NA, which is scheduled to commence on January 21.
Last year, the NA passed a resolution demanding the creation of South Punjab. The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) had submitted a resolution in NA demanding four new provinces, but the NA secretariat did not entertain its resolution.
Also last year, the Punjab Assembly (PA) unanimously passed a resolution demanding the formation of a commission to create two new provinces, including South Punjab and Bahawalpur.
President Asif Ali Zardari, keeping in view the PA’s resolution, formed a commission to carve out two new provinces.
Two individuals who raised their voice for the restoration of Bahawalpur province were Nawab Salahuddin Abbasi and current Governor Makhdom Ahmed Mehmood.
