Rising Manchar Lake alarms Wapda

LAHORE: A technical team of Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda), led by the entity’s chairman, Shakil Durrani, spent the last three days in Sindh assessing and monitoring the flood situation on the ground, especially in Manchar–Dadu area.

The chairman held a meeting with the Sindh provincial administration and Army Engineering Corps at Sehwan Cantt, discussing the situation arising out of the devastating floods at Main Nara Valley Drain (MNVD) and Manchar Lake.

The meeting was informed that water in Manchar Lake had risen to an alarming level and immediate remedial measures were required.

Various options to divert floodwater to Indus River, in view of water level in the lake, were put forth by the participants.

Durrani said that sensitive dykes of the MNVD were being strengthened round-the-clock to avoid the threat of breach by Wapda officials, with the help of locals.
