KARACHI: KESC registered a 1-0 over Wapda yesterday to finish the Pakistan Premier Football League (PPFL) season in second position behind newly-crowned champions KRL.

KESC’s Abdul Salam scored the sole goal of the match in the fourth minute to seal the win.

With the win, KESC finished second on the league table and have 62 points, the same as Muslim FC. However, the latter team was pushed down to third position based on the two teams’ goal difference.

Muhammad Rasool scored 15 of the season’s 60 goals for KESC with the team conceding only 27 goals in their 30 matches. On the other hand, Muslim FC scored 35 goals and got 12 more as a result of four walk-overs as Wapda, Navy, PAF and Wohaib FC skipped their matches in Chaman.

“It was a very tough season for us but as we’re nearing its end, I believe it was totally worth it,” KESC captain Essa Khan told The Express Tribune.

“We had almost lost our chance at the silver medal midway through the season. For us it was a do-or-die situation towards the end. We were already a little worried about the fact that Muslim FC were getting more points because of the walk-overs. But now I can say that all the pressure and hard work that we put in throughout the season was worth it. We were fifth last season; it’s good to be among the top teams for the first time.”

Khan had switched from KRL to KESC two years ago. He said that although KRL continue to lead the league, his efforts with KESC have paid him well.

It is the first time that KESC have won any medal in the PPFL. They were included in the league in 2005 and have kept their place in the league since.

Meanwhile, in the second match of the day, Navy held KRL 1-1 in a draw.

With the tie, Navy finished the season in seventh position with 37 points while KRL extended their lead with 70 points.

KRL will conclude the league with the last match on January 15 against PIA, whereas Army will take on KPT and NBP is scheduled to play Afghan FC today.
