A protest was held outside the PPC by the Pakhtunkhwa Civil Society Network and representatives of several other organisations on Thursday in light of the January 1 attack in which seven aid workers in Swabi were shot dead.
Protesters asked the government to announce compensation of Rs2 million for families of slain workers and provision of security for all non-governmental organisation (NGO) staffers in K-P and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata).
“We have to raise a collective voice against militants, if we remain silent we will soon be among those targeted,” said provincial head for Aurat Foundation Shabeena Ayaz, adding that the government has failed to provide protection to aid workers.
She said frequent attacks on NGO workers are a great concern for the civil society and developmental projects are being affected. At least 16 aid workers from different organisations have been targeted during 2012, said Citizen Rights and Sustainable Development Director Idrees Kamal.
Shagufta Hidayat from Shirkat Gah, a women resource centre, said that after frequent attacks in different areas, a wave of fear has gripped women workers. “We have come out today to show solidarity with the victims’ families.”
Mian Iftikhar assured demonstrators that a meeting will be held with Social Welfare Minister Sitara Ayaz to discuss the security plan. A final strategy will be prepared after consultations with all NGOs,” he added.
About the monetary compensation for slain workers in Swabi, he said the cases are being discussed and their families will been given financial assistance.
