Following the MQM chief's apology, the court said that it welcomed the move and appreciated it.
His lawyer Farrukh Naseem conveyed Altaf’s apology to the court.
Altaf’s nine-member legal team appeared before the court to defend him. Naseem, heading the team, told the court that his client respected the court.
In a written statement submitted before the court by Altaf, he retracted remarks he had made during his December 2 speech, in which he had termed the court’s remarks “unconstitutional” and “undemocratic”.
In the statement Altaf said, “I leave myself at the mercy of the Supreme Court.”
MQM leader Farooq Sattar also tendered an unconditional apology.
MQM chief has shown great deal of statemanship, greatness: Sattar
Speaking to the media outside Supreme Court, Sattar said that by offering an apology, the MQM chief had shown a “great deal of statesmanship and greatness.”
The MQM leader said that after consulting with the legal team, Altaf prepared the statement which was submitted before the judicial bench, today.
Speaking about the MQM chief’s ‘political drone’ strike, Sattar said that it will be a “pleasant surprise” as it was a tradition of his party to “give pleasant surprises.”
Moreover, he said that MQM had always struggled to uphold the judiciary and its dignity, and that it respected judiciary’s independence. “The fact that MQM has, time and again, spoken for judiciary’s independence is not hidden from anyone.”
Earlier, while hearing the Karachi suo motu implementation case, Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry observed that the Supreme Court will only deal with the contempt notice issued to Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain after it is done hearing the Karachi unrest case.
On December 14, the apex court had issued contempt of court notice to Altaf, observing that he used contemptuous language about the judiciary and the judges.
The chief justice inquired about the steps taken after the interim order was issued by the Supreme Court. He asked if peace was restored in Karachi.
The advocate general Sindh informed him that the implementation of the order was in process.
Justice Chaudhry said that if the orders are not implemented within a year, then the contempt plea would be proven right.
He observed that the interim ordered issued on November 28, 2012, had stated that irrelevant people should not be allowed to enter Karachi. Justice Chauhdry said it was leniency that let Karachi open doors for the Taliban to infiltrate the city.
Earlier, headed by Justice Chaudhry, a three-member bench took exception to Altaf Hussain’s speech and issued notice to him to personally appear before the bench and explain as to why contempt of court proceedings should not be initiated against him.
The MQM has already pleaded the Supreme Court to exempt Altaf from appearing in person before the court in response to the contempt notice.

Well Done Altaf Hussain :) #Hope4Pakistan
Mature Step by MQM. Also I must salute MQM's effort to control the emotions of there workers, otherwise another Nov 28 1997, could've easily been repeated. Definately Led by EXAMPLE. Hats off
The reaction and the strike that followed were also signs of Statesmanship and Greatness I believe. Hay na Sattar Sahb?
The law of contempt of court is in essence to be used very very seldom, otherwise it loses it value.
It is confirmed. Our mighty CJ is a tiger only against weak punching bags.
Balochistan issue: He went after the civilian government, and gave a clean chit to the FC. May 12: Didn't really give any verdict against anyone. ISI case: Strangest decision ever. No sentencing. A happy ending for everyone. Only target came out to be the president. Shia Genocide: No Suo Motto Conviction of Terrorists: Not a single suo motto or a judgement Mumtaz Qadri: No suo mottoI say supreme court has disentangled itself fr a potential conflict with a party thatis not a soft pinch bag like PPP
What an appology , what a DRONE
@Karachiite: Yousuf Raza Gilani appeared to the court and lost his ministry.
@Sarmad hasan ,A chudhry from Balochistan .?? Nice try . He is imply to defend Nawaz and against the PPP and MQM ie Sindh .
Takes a man to apologies. Well done to both.
Babara Awan had also tendered an unconditional appology. But his case is still in court and his license still suspended!
Proud of the Supreme Court!! YES OUR SUPREME COURT IS NOW TURNING TO BE SUPREME #rayofhope
There is not something KALA in DAAL, whole DAAL is KALI.
What a joke: PPP leaders are indicted when they tender unconditional apology, in fact Babar Awan's apology was taken as admission of guilt by the honorable judges and he was indicted. These are some double standards!
It is becoming clear that what MQM is getting in return for supporting Qadri.
Different laws for rich and poor? Will I be pardoned if I kill a person and say 'sorry, my lord?' Btw, Yousuf Raza Gilani had apologized too. Why he wasn't pardoned?
If he was to say sorry then what was the use of sending the Alibaba and the 40 thieves to the SC.
@Sattar MQM chief has shown great deal of statemanship, greatness
The true statesmen never give such derogatory stetements in the first place.
It seem that it has become a sort of fashion to first ridicule the judges/court & its orders than when summoned through notice...submit un-conditional apology.
Even then there are people who believes in judiciary bashing....
Why was Gillani convicted then? He also said I respect Supreme court.
MQM has the habit of giving pleasant surprise, good that Altaf Hussain preferred method over flare. Congrats MQM!
Give the guy some credit..he tendered in an unconditional apology. Don't forget Gillani, Baber Awan and this Raja PM, all of them came up with excuses of defying the court orders?? Altaf Hussein should be given the due credit of accepting his bad.
I leave myself at the mercy of the supreme court :) Ab aya ao'ndh bahar k neechay lolx
The message SC sent out today: Insult us all you want but don't forget to send your lawyer with an unconditional apology when u r done
It is a happy news that the Apex Court has disposed of the contempt notice against Altaf Bhai
Apology tendered and accepted.
@C3PO: Hate mongers like u have been left with crap on ur face once again.
Chapter closed happily.
@ C3PO what is "Punjabi judiciary" ? The CJ is from Balochistan and has been the best character Pakistan has seen in its history. Are you on drugs ? may be get some warm milk and go to sleep
Welldone Justice Chaudhary. This is the only time I liked your "resolve" to make the Court you head "Supreme".
This was the only way out.
Well done Altaf Bhai.
The verdict is already out ,we know it .Punjabi Judiciary will be partial , we know .
Political parties think that they are only accountable to the public and no one else. I think this doctrine needs to change.
:) can't wait for its judgement day! it better be good!!!!
