KARACHI: As the world celebrated the New Year, Karachi went through the same old things: targeted killings, bomb blasts and defused bombs. Five people were shot dead across Karachi on Tuesday.

Near the Habib Bank chowrangi in SITE, inspector Mohammad Faiz, 30, was shot dead in a targeted attack, SITE A-Section police said. The victim was posted with the Anti-Violent Crime Cell (AVCC) of Sindh police.

He was on his way to the Garden police headquarters from his residence in Frontier Colony when two armed men on a motorcycle killed him, AVCC chief SSP Niaz Khosa said. Faiz had played a major role in busting several kidnapping gangs.

In Old Golimar, municipal officer Abdul Razzak Baloch, 35, was shot dead by two armed motorcyclists, Gulbahar police said.

The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation officer was going to his office in Gadap when he was fired at in his white-coloured Honda City car, DSP Iftikhar Lodhi said. The victim was shot multiple times and died on the spot. His body was taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

In Jahanabad, at least two armed men on a motorcycle gunned down a young man, Pak Colony police said. The victim’s identity could not be established. The man was brought by the assailants on their motorcycle and shot dead afterwards, witnesses said.

The Sohrab Goth police found the body of 30-year-old Naimatullah in Ayub Goth. The victim lived in Jannat Gul Town and was killed after bring kidnapped. The body was taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

In the precincts of Sher Shah police, the body of a young man was found from his house on Nayab Road. Sahib Khan Elahi, 35, was found dead by his brother when he came to visit him, police said. The body was shifted to Civil Hospital Karachi. Doctors said the body was at least seven days old and the victim was shot multiple times.

Celebratory gunfire

At least one casualty was reported and more than 20 people were injured in different areas as Karachi reverberated with celebratory gunshots on the eve of New Year.

The first killing of the year was reported in Gulistan-e-Jauhar where a security guard, Riaz Khan, 33, was killed. The body was taken to a nearby hospital. A murder case was registered at the Sharae Faisal police station.
