Water supply problems: Sindh’s irrigation system in disrepair
Shah says that there are reports that 80% of tube-wells are non-functional.
KARACHI:
Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah on Monday presided over a meeting of the Irrigation Department on water-logging and tube-wells at the Chief Minister House here. The chief minister observed that due to three years of heavy rains, the lands of the province are suffering from water-logging in many areas, while there is drought-like situation in other areas. He said that a scheme for the installation of tube-wells aimed to reduce the water level in water-logged areas and also provide water for irrigation purposes. Shah added that the section overseeing the project is not working properly and no attention is being given to the maintenance and operational use of tube-wells with the result that the water level has increased with time. Shah said that there are reports that 80% of tube-wells are non-functional and warned that he has ordered an inquiry to probe the situation about the causes of their disrepair.
